A while back, you may remember the big hubbub over the ‘Curse of Silence‘ exploit that allowed an attacker to disable the messaging capabilities on Nokia’s S60 3rd Edition-powered smartphones, by sending a carefully crafted message. The attack did not hurt the rest of the phone, and was easily remedied with a hard reset. Nokia took quite a blasting from the community, which said that Nokia was lazy, ignoring such a ‘huge’ security flaw, etc.
Fortunately, that’s simply not true, as Nokia, in addition to working with carriers to help prevent the attack, has now released an official, FREE cleanup tool for users to download and install. This is in stark contrast to snake oil salesmen F-Secure, who insisted that users could pay them $60/year to be ‘protected’ against such a ‘vicious’ attack.
You can download the tool here, and just store it on your phone or computer, if you’re paranoid about being attacked. It’s quite simple to use (just install it), and it’s free. Cause Nokia cares.
