It’s that time of year again, when all of the biggest and smallest names in mobile gather at Barcelona, Spain for the Mobile World Congress event. Unfortunately, neither Rita nor I will be there in person, though the crew from MobileBurn will be there, leaving me to be their at-home correspondent. Either way, we’ll still have plenty of great coverage here at Symbian-Guru, for everything Symbian-related from the show.
I have to confess, unlike Snoyt, I’m extremely excited for this year’s Mobile World Congress. We’ve seen the leaks from Samsung and Nokia, and I can only imagine what goodies haven’t been leaked yet. To kick things off, here’s a few items that I would like to see announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress:
1. I want to see more S60 phones from Samsung and LG. Both are licensees, and neither have historically done much with S60. We know that Samsung is pushing the boundaries, with the leaked i8910’s 8 megapixel camera, HD video recording, and S60v5, but what about LG? I want to see at least 2-3 new S60-powered monsters out of both of these Asian manufacturers.
2. I want to see Nokia step it up in the image/video arena. This does *not* mean higher megapixel counts. This means better flashes, better camera features (stabilization, etc), and more importantly, better accessories. I want to see the new version of the Nokia DT-22 Tripod, this time designed to hold the newer phones in the traditional landscape orientation. I also want to see, finally, a freakin microphone, for video bloggers such as myself.
3. I want to see full Ovi integration from Nokia. It’s been nearly 2 years since we first hear the word ‘Ovi’ from Nokia, and still, it’s a patchwork quilt of purchased services. Sure, they all use the same username/password now (mostly), but they’re still disjointed. I want a single buddy list, maintained across all Ovi services, and I want to be able to sign in once, be it on my mobile or my desktop.
4. I want to see a proper Facebook and Twitter app for S60. I don’t really care who this comes from, but I want it. There’s really no excuse for the S60 platform to not have native apps to support these uber-popular services.
5. Most of all, I want to see something *NEW*. Not re-hashed, and not improved, but NEW. I want to see something that enables my phone to do something that it has never done before. This one is really open to any manufacturer/developer, but I want to see it.
What do you want to see at the 2009 Mobile World Congress next year? Is there a specific dream device, or dream application that you want to see? You can follow our coverage of Mobile World Congress through the main feed, but we’ve also setup this category, to keep it all together.
