When the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic came out, there was a severe lack of applications available. Many of the S60 3rd Edition applications that you know and love work, but there are still more that simply do not. As the phone is launched in more countries, and with the pending release of the Nokia N97, we can only expect that more and more applications will be updated with support for the 5800 XpressMusic and N97, both of which use S60 5th Edition.
First up is JoikuSpot Light, which has been updated to v2.4 and now supports the 5800 XpressMusic. JoikuSpot took the S60 scene by storm last year, and is now available in the Download! client of most S60-powered smartphones. This little application is able to turn your phone into a WiFi router, using the 3G cellular data connection and the phone’s built-in WiFi. JoikuSpot Light is the free version, and allows basic access for other devices to connect to the internet through the phone’s WiFi. The commercial version, JoikuSpot Premium, allows more sophisticated connections, such as VPN support and email. JoikuSpot Premium is on sale now at the Symbian-Guru Software Store for $14.90 through February.
Synble, which we covered in-depth here at Symbian-Guru, has also updated its device client to v1.2, with rough support for the 5800 XpressMusic and N97. The application works, though the Synble gang is aware that there are some UI issues to be ironed out. You can get more information from their blog.
DailyMobile.se is reporting that there is a new version of Nokia’s SportsTracker application, specifically for the 5800 XpressMusic and N97. Although this new version is not available on the official SportsTracker download page, you can download it here. (link removed by request)
BuddyCloud has also been updated for S60 5th Edition with v0.2.65 now available. BuddyCloud is a messaging/social networking application that allows you to update your status across several networks, including Twitter and Facebook. The program is also capable of sharing your position, so that friends can find you easily. You can download BuddyCloud here.
Another great application that is now available is SMS Spam Manager, from Webgate. This application lives up to its name and offers a ton of options for sorting and managing your SMS. While you cannot block specific SMS from being delivered to your phone, you can use an application such as SMS Spam Manager to eliminate all notifications for these unwanted SMS, so that you don’t have to deal with them. There is a free trial of SMS Spam Manager available, though the full version is only $12.95.
Last, but certainly not least, is a new application from Junni Kokuki, called FreeUnRAR. As you might have guessed, this application makes it easy to manage .RAR archives on your phone, including opening them to access the files stored inside. You can check it out here, there’s a few different versions.
