Killer Mobile, the crew behind great software such as BlackBaller and Total Recall, has teamed up with Adtronic to make their entire software catalog available for free! Adtronic is able to show small banner ads following phone actions (ending a phone call, receiving an SMS, etc), and you can even designate how often you see these advertisements. The ads are targeted, and you can choose from 15 different categories, so that guys aren’t getting makeup ads, or girls getting ads for motor oil.
The adtronic system is brand new, and it’s actually a downloadable store with over 150 apps currently. They plan to have 1,500 apps in the store by the end of 2009, which would be pretty neat. Basically, you get points or credits for each ad that you view, and those points/credits can be redeemed for full applications. It’s a great way for users to get free apps, while developers still get paid for them.
Of course, you can still purchase the full version of Killer Mobile’s various software titles, ad-free, just like you could previously – they’re just giving you another option to get their software. I tested the application on the Nokia N79, and only noticed a small hit to my battery life. I didn’t have any other issues, such as RAM or instability, which is good, and I didn’t feel like the ads were too intrusive. Adtronic is created by Liquid Air Lab, and you can download the adtronic store app here.
Here’s a video demo of the system in action:
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think ad-supported systems like this are worth it, or would you rather just buy the app outright and not have ads shown on your phone?
