We’ve covered several Twitter applications here on Symbian-Guru.com, including Stew, Dabr.co.uk, and more, but none stand up to the power of a native application that automatically refreshes. Introducing Gravity, from MobileWays.de (the same folks who brought us Remote Professional). This native Twitter application is full featured and runs great on any S60 3rd Edition smartphone, including the Nokia N79 and the Nokia E63. Future versions will also support S60v5 devices such as the 5800 XpressMusic and the N97.
So, how does Gravity work? Excellent. It’s an early beta, and is lacking several key features, but it definitely works well. From the main screen, you can add multiple accounts from both Twitter and Identi.ca services, and you’ll also be notified if there is a new version of Gravity to download (the beta has been updated 3 times since I first installed it last week).
From there, the application consists of a series of tabs, which you can scroll right or left to see. The first tab is your current timeline – showing tweets or updates from all of your contacts, just like the default view on Twitter. As you can see, updates are shown with the person’s avatar, as well as when the update was posted. You can click on any of these updates to respond with an @reply to the poster, or you can press the right softkey to bring up a small submenu, from which you can retweet the message or follow any links included inside.
From your timeline, you can scroll to the right once more to see a list of any updates from anyone that includes an @reply to you. This is helpful to somewhat carry on a conversation on Twitter. The next tab over shows any direct messages you have received. Yet another click to the right gives you a list of your updates, and another click shows the direct messages you have sent to other people. The last click to the right brings you to a list of your favorite tweets, if you use that feature.
The only thing missing, really, is a search tab, where I could specify a keyword(s) to search for. Other features that are currently not available include the ability to specify a default access point, the ability for the application to autostart, or automatically connect upon start, and the ability to notify the user of new updates. Regardless of those and other missing features, Gravity is hands-down the most promising upcoming Twitter application for S60-powered smartphones.
Currently, Gravity is only available to a small closed group of beta testers. However, the developer, MobileWays.de, intends to open this group soon, and hopes to have a publicly available version in early March. You can get more information directly from MobileWays.de, but rest assured we’ll let you know when it’s fully available. Remember, you can follow Symbian-Guru.com on Twitter here.
