Coming off its 5 new smartphone announcements, Nokia kicks off the second day of Mobile World Congress with news around its software services, as well as integration with others. Today, Nokia announced that it will be integrating Skype services into its Nseries smartphones, beginning with the N97, in Q3 2009. The service will be integrated into the actual Nokia phonebook, allowing users to see whether or not their Skype friends are online, and to initiate a call or chat with them, either via cellular data or WiFi.
The integration will come to other S60-powered Nseries phones later, but will be integrated completely into the firmware – this will not be a downloadable application, but rather will be ‘installed’ via a firmware update. Personally, while I think waiting for a firmware update is going to be frustrating, specifically in the U.S., with the N95-3 still fresh on our minds, I think that I’m willing to be OK with that, given the supposed level of integration that we’re talking about here.
We’ll try to get a video or something showing this in action, as it definitely sounds cool. Now, what about Facebook?
