It had been rumored before, but we now have an official confirmation of the new Samsung OmniaHD, also known as the i8910. This touchscreen smartphone is powered by Nokia’s S60 5th Edition user interface, like the N97. However, the OmniaHD features a massive 3.7″ touchscreen display at QHD (360×640 pixels) resolution, and it’s AM OLED, which means you’ll have robust colors. Having used the N85 for a while, I can safely say I would be 100% happy if all of my future cell phones had OLED displays. Everything else just looks washed out.
Aside from its touchscreen, the Samsung OmniaHD packs in an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, smile detection, digital image stabilization, and other great software enhancements designed to make sure your photos turn out nice. The OmniaHD will be available in 2 variants, one with 8GB internal storage, the other with 16GB, and there is a microSD card slot as well, for extra storage. The big news, too, is that the i8910 will capture high-definition video (720p), which is way cool, and completely trumps anything that Nokia has announced to date. Time will tell whether or not the experience and end result is actually up to snuff.
Unfortunately for American and Canadian hopefuls, while the OmniaHD features quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) support, only a Euro-3G variant was announced, with tri-band 3G (900/1900/2100MHz) support. It should be noted that for some AT&T customers, 1900MHz 3G will work just fine. However, you will not be getting the full 3G experience if you travel the country.
Samsung wasn’t officially sure when the OmniaHD is expected to launch, or what type of pricing you can plan for, annoyingly. Here’s the full spec table:
