You know what I hate the most about S60? That whenever I install a new application, it has to ask me if I want to connect to the internet and what access point to use; that JAVA applications, even after editing their preferences in the Application Manager, still want to ask me when they launch if they could connect to the internet; that some applications don’t have a preferred access point in their setting, and hence ask me each and every time what access point to use for their connection. I’m fed up. Totally fed up. I know that these are security measures to prevent connection to the internet from certain malware applications that average users might not know about. I know that. But I’d like to take the risk, personally.
There are already a few applications that allow you to prioritize access points and hence have your phone automatically switch between WiFi and 3G when available, but this is not all that is needed. I would love to see this idea pushed further. How about an application that sits in the background the whole time and prevents my phone from asking me “allow application to use the network and send or receive data?”. It should fetch the notification before I see it on my screen and automatically answer “yes”, each and every time. It should also fetch the “Choose access point” menu as well, and instantly direct it to my favorite one(s) without me having to click on anything. I want it work on applications that I have just installed, applications that don’t have a preferred access point setting, java applications, built-in applications, applications that already have a preferred access point setting, basically everywhere on my device. I want to open it once, just when I install it, tell it what my favorite access point(s) is(are), prioritize them, and don’t touch it again, but enjoy it every single second of using my device. I want it to automatically launch when I turn my device off and on, and I want it to be a system application, thus preventing it from closing down if the system has less resources.
What about you? Is there an application that you’d like to see on your S60 device but that hasn’t been developed yet? Tell us, and we’ll make sure to include it in our Developer Challenge series!
About the Developer Challenge series: we receive a lot of questions from developers asking us what kind of application we’d like to see on our devices. Since sometimes we fail to remember what we really want, and other times we have too many ideas on our head that we can’t really type them all in one email, we decided to create this series. That way, we’re not giving any preference to any developer, they can all access this series publicly and see all our application wishes. This series is also meant to be interactive, by commenting on these posts and by giving us new ideas, you could be helping us shape the future of S60 applications.
