While other touchscreen smartphones are waiting to use their GPS receiver for voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now boasts two fully supported navigation applications that you can choose from! Garmin Mobile XT, which we’ve reviewed here on Symbian-Guru before, is now updated to v5.00.30, with support for the 5800 XpressMusic (and soon, the N97!). This new version offers a simplified, touchscreen-friendly layout, which should make it a cinch to use in a vehicle (with someone else driving, of course).
Another feature in this new version is a new background service that monitors incoming messages that could contain information used by Garmin Mobile XT. We’re not sure what those messages might be, or where they would come from, but if you’re skeptical, you can disable this background service in the settings. They’ve also changed the default on-map icon to a blue car, which should make it easier to spot.
There’s an active thread on HowardForums, with several actual users offering feedback and help. I’ve used a few of their screenshots in this post, with their permission.
You can purchase Garmin Mobile XT for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (or any other S60v3 phone) for $80 from Amazon.
Below are two videos put together to show the menus and user interface on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic (warning: weird, loud music):
