One of my favorite accessories to use with my cell phone is the Nokia DT-22 tripod. We’ve covered this one before, but basically, it’s a well-built and sturdy tripod that comes with a specially crafted clip to hold your S60-powered cameraphone. The clip can be attached to any standard tripod using the standard camera mounting screw, which makes it convenient to use with my Quikpod on trips and such. However, one of the biggest problems is that this clip was really designed to hold the Nokia N93(i), which had a very unique form factor. It is also designed to hold the phone in portrait mode, as that was what worked best with the N93(i). Unfortunately, the newer S60-powered cameraphones are designed to be held in landscape mode, which presented an awkward problem.
Fortunately, thanks to a hint from Steve Garfield, I was recently able to figure out a new way to use this clip to firmly hold the newer S60-powered cameraphones, like my Nokia N79! The trick, as you can see in the photos, is to angle the shorter arm of the tripod’s clip against the phone, pushing it up against the longer arm. This holds the phone in the landscape mode, with free access to the camera button on the side, as well as the 3.5mm audio port on the N79, which I use for a makeshift microphone input with the inline remote.
The clip is able to hold the N79 in this position very firmly, and I’ve used this with the Quikpod already, which works well, too. I would offer a link for you to purchase the Nokia DT-22, but for some reason, Nokia insists on making it impossible to actually purchase its accessories. In the meantime, you can give another company, Sunpak, your money, since Nokia’s Accessories team doesn’t seem to want it. The Sunpak Versapod is essentially a cheaper version of the Nokia DT-22, and includes the same clip. It’s even available in three different colors.
