I’ve just received word from a Nokia source that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM’s 3G woes have been addressed with a new firmware update. If you recall, one of the many things that went horribly wrong with the launch of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM is that the units seemed to have trouble using AT&T’s 3G network – specifically in New York and Chicago, according to Nokia. Whatever caused that, Nokia believes it has fixed the problem with a new firmware update, which will be applied to the existing stock, and will also be pushed to the few units they did sell soon.
I wasn’t able to confirm exactly when these fixed units would be back on the shelves, so you may want to give it a day or 2 before bombarding the flagship stores again. If you purchased the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM through another retailer, you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for new updates. You can check to see if a new firmware update is available for your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic right from the phone, by opening the dialer and typing in *#0000#. This will bring up the device manager, and from there, simply press options – check for update.
With this one hurdle out of the way, let’s see if Nokia can still manage to salvage this launch. I’ve been using the 5800 XpressMusic (Euro) again today, and it’s really getting a bit better each time, with new applications coming available.
