Not that it’s really surprising, but Nokia recently told Reuters that it will be shuttering its MOSH service sometime before the new Ovi Store launches in May. MOSH was an open service, and very much the predecessor of the Ovi Store. Basically, you could upload just about anything you wanted, and easily share it with your friends, either through the desktop website, or a mobile site. MOSH also had what they called a mobile app, though it was nothing more than a shell with a bunch of mobile weblinks.
MOSH has been somewhat of a thorn in Nokia’s side, as the site, unmoderated by Nokia, quickly became a haven for pirated applications and adult content. I confessed a long while ago that I didn’t quite ‘get’ MOSH, and was even more confused when they added the ability for users to request content, which other users were supposed to magically be motivated to provide.
Either way, I have no doubts that Nokia learned quite a bit from MOSH, and wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the various features, such as ease of uploading, sharing with friends, and similar functions pop up on the Ovi Store. In any case, MOSH is going soon, so if you can manage to navigate the interface, you’d better get while the gettin’s good.
