I remember when I had the N73, one of the cool functions was to use the LED flash as a flashlight. Various applications made this possible, with the most popular one being S60 SpotOn making use of the LED flash as well as the screen to lighten things up. SpotOn was one of my favorite applications until new phones such as the N82 and the N95 came out and I was no longer able to use the LED as a torch, but could only display the red light. The Nokia E63 has the ability to use the LED as a flashlight without any 3rd party applications, using just the spacebar. However, the 5800 XpressMusic is left out, since it lacks hardware keys to act as shortcuts. This is where PhoneTorch comes in.
Bringing back the shining light from the golden days, it transforms your Nokia 5800 XpressMusic to a flashlight using the white and the red LED on the phone. The website contains the unsigned and signed version as well as a zip file with both, and did I say that it’s available for free? It has a morse code mode, which could turn out to be a life saver.
Unfortunately, PhoneTorch is not available for S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 or FP2 devices, as of right now. The developer is working on a fix for the FP2 devices, though, so all hope is not lost yet. Feature Pack 1 devices, such as the Nokia N95 and Nokia N82 are said to be unsupported due to lack of the required functions. A changelog is also available for the application as well as download of previous version.
