Just recently we told you about an update for Python with support for the 5800 XpressMusic and Samsung devices, and now there’s already a new update. This time there are more goodies, such as fullscreen support for the 5800 XpressMusic. Some of the major new features include a single Nokia signed runtime package, so that the PyS60 runtime .sis will work on S60 3rd edition up to S60 5th edition handsets, meaning that you can run Python applications without having Python installed. (Compare that to Java runtime environment).
Improved application packager, meaning that other modules required for an application to work will automatically be included, easier runtime deployment as well as four new API’s, which lets you access and set default access points in the socket module and check capabilities that an application has, and a fullscreen mode for the 5800. More extensive details are available from here
For starters let me again remind you that these releases are not meant for the general public, but more focused on developers and hobby programmers. Therefore you should proceed with caution as it can potentially damage the system on your phone. I’ll stay away from this version mainly because of my previous experience besides I don’t have the 5800 XpressMusic. Nonetheless, it sure looks interesting, and points to some cool possibilities for any Python developers out there.
