The guys over at Croozeus have let us know that an updated version of Python is available as well as a version for Samsung Phones. The new version brings support for touch phones such as the 5800 XpressMusic, new API for checking whether a handset is touch enabled or not and a new module scriptext. The version for Samsung phones is not able to run Python scripts directly as there is no ‘shell’ for it. However, files packed into .sis, Symbian installation files, should be able to run just fine.
In my eager attempt to try out this new version I came across a problem. The new version have an updated P.I.P.S component which is also one of the components used in the N-gage application. After installing Python, I found my N-gage games blanked out with the only option to remove the games from my device, forcing me to re-download and reinstall all my N-gage games. Luckily, the folks in charge noticed this, and released an update yesterday.
Another thing I found out is that the path to the Python scripts now is changed from C:/Data/Python to C:/Python and E:/ if installed in memory card. This might cause issues with some Python applications. Note that this new version of Python is not intended for end users, but for developers and testers. If you still want to download it, you can head over at Maemo.
What do you think? What kind of new possibilities can the support for touch interface bring?
