I have been using Google Docs for a while now, not as my main document editing suite, but as a backup to some of the documents that I need to access in different places. Being that I’m in lab research, sometimes I prepare an experience protocol at home, then I access it when I get to the lab (where I find myself juggling between different computers), then I improve some aspects of it later when I’m back at home. I tried using email attachments but it’s just too bothersome, so I ended up with Google Docs and I’ve been very satisfied.
The problem I face is that I can’t access these documents easily when on-the-go. Sure, Google has an easy web interface that allows me to view Documents, as well as view and do minor edits with Spreadsheets, but the possibilities end there, which sucks. I would love to have a Google Docs application for S60, a real one.
The application should allow me to access, view and edit all my documents when I simply pinch in my Google log in and password. It should instantly synchronize my changes with Google Docs on the web, so if I save a file on the phone and open it one minute later on the web, all the changes that I’ve made are already there. I would also like to see all the editing aspects of Google Docs in it, not just a simple text typing edit: formatting, tables, pictures inserting… Another important feature is sharing the document, be it via email or by adding contributors and viewers.
One aspect I would utterly love to have is some sort of integration with my Gmail. It would be awesome if the application could search my last say 30 emails and see if I received a Word or Excel document as an attachment. It would then ask me if it should import them to Google Docs. I’ll be able to edit them like any other document, but when I choose to Share them, it should give me all the options stated in the paragraph above, plus an easy option to email it back to the person who first sent it to me. That would be a real killer feature.
I’ve seen a lot of developers pour over Google Translate apps (which is nice), but I would love to see a few of those work on a Google Docs application. Developers developers, here’s your chance to make an application that has never been made before, what say you?
