After Dotsisx’s recent piece, voicing her frustrations with the latest update of Nokia’s Ovi Share media service, we were quite surprised, and disappointed, to read the latest news from Reuters that Nokia is ceasing further investment in the service. They’re quick to point out that the service will not be shuttered completely, which is good, but it will not be improved upon any further. Similar to Jaiku, while Ovi Share is not being killed directly, it *is* being left for dead, which, in my opinion, is basically the same thing. This is not the only sad news to come out of Nokia recently, though.
A few weeks ago, we also got confirmation that S60.com will be going the way of the DoDo within the next few months. The S60 Ambassadors program, on which I had the privilege of working for a few months, has been closed, as well. You can read the full details on the S60 Ambassadors program here, and you can read Saara’s post about S60.com here. There will be no new content posted after June 30, though the site and its current content will apparently remain for a little while past that.
While I’m certainly sad to see the S60 brand going under, I’m glad to see that Nokia and Symbian Foundation are moving forward and eliminating extraneous brands, seemingly. This lines up with our recent post on whether Symbian Foundation could be a consumer brand. I’m also glad I never listened to Stefan Constantinescu when he repeatedly told me I should change the site to S60-Guru.com.
What do you think about all these changes?
