It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the Nokia N79. I would even venture to say that it is, hands-down, the best overall Nseries phone on the market today. Yesterday, I was reminded again of why I love this little candybar smartphone so much, as it completely proved my belief that technology should enrich and enable your real life. Here’s a recount of the day.
The day started around noon, when Mrs. Guru and I met some friends at our church to head out to the Texas Rangers baseball game at The Ballpark in Arlington. I had Gravity and Nokia Messaging loaded up for the 30 minute drive out there, and received a few messages here and there. Once at the game, I sent a few SMS, nothing big. The real saving points came later on.
Somewhere around the 3rd inning, I received an email from Wampyre about an issue with the site. I was able to investigate a little bit, but since WordPress doesn’t have a reliable mobile-friendly version, and their overuse of Ajax in the backend, I had to forward the email to Dotsisx, who was able to quickly get things taken care of, then email me a confirmation. I then emailed Wampyre back to let him know it was fixed.
A few innings later, I received an email from Evan Silbert, at iUnlock.com, one of our awesome sponsors. There was an issue with his current campaign that needed to be addressed ASAP. Luckily, the N79 was up to the task. First, I was able to login to MyXmarks.com, which is a FireFox plugin that I use to sync my bookmarks remotely. Through their mobile-friendly site, I was able to find the bookmark for my ad server login, and pull up our ad server on my N79 using the default browser. I was easily able to fix the issue, and then email Evan back to let him know I’d fixed it and would get back in touch with him by Monday.
During the game, I was able to snap some awesome pictures, including one of this lady’s hat, which, well, words can’t describe, so I took a picture.

I was also able to use Qik to instantly share a short video with all my friends, showing the opening inning and gameplay, as well as a shot of the stadium, teeming with cheering fans. This Qik was posted to my Twitter, as well as uploaded to my YouTube and Share Online accounts, with location information tagged, so you could see where the Ballpark is. You can watch it below:

After the ballgame (which the Rangers won, w00t!), there was a Robert Earl Keen concert, and I’m a pretty big fan. Unfortunately, the other people in our group, including Mrs. Guru, were already tired and didn’t feel like sitting around for a concert, so I reluctantly walked towards the truck. However, on the drive home, I was able to enjoy some good Texas country music, thanks to Mobbler and my N79 NAM’s 3G connection. I have a 3.5mm lead for my truck’s stereo, so we were able to enjoy the music, streamed over the internet, directly through my truck’s speaker system. Phenomenal.
By the time we got home, my N79 still had over half of its battery available, and it had helped me to take pictures to remember a cool event, share video live with my friends, resolve an issue with Symbian-Guru.com, avoid a crisis with an advertiser, which is *way* important, and make up for the fatigue of my friends. Sure, most smartphones today could likely have handled the same thing, but none of them are in such a small package as the Nokia N79.
