When it rains, it pours, apparently, as a handful of various updates appear to be heading our way in the Symbian world. Let’s start with applications – admittedly, only one application has recently been updated – Nokia’s Multimedia Transfer, for OS X users. Nokia just updated this to include support for the recently launched Nokia N86 8MP and N97 smartphones, both of which are multimedia-focused, so we’re glad to see some attention being given here.
In terms of firmware, there are several that are now available, and a few that should be available any day now, according to rumors. For starters, the Nokia N85 NAM and N79 NAM have finally received the v20.175 firmware update that their Euro counterparts received last month. In fact, the Euro versions have already gotten yet another new firmware, v30.011, so at least we NAM users have something to look forward to, I suppose.
Also, the seemingly-forgotten Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is believed to be getting an update to v31.0.015 very soon, with a bevy of miscellaneous bugfixes and updates. I can only hope that we’ll see some of the cool tweaks from the N97 added there, such as predictive text in the onscreen QWERTY, *any* improvement to the homescreen, and kinetic scrolling throughout the phone. On a similar note, Nokia Conversations tweeted last week that firmware v11.0.021 for the Nokia N97 would be available for some variants beginning July 1st (tomorrow). This much sooner than the September estimate I had been hearing, and I’m anxious to update my N97 Euro that I’m reviewing, for a hopefully smoother experience.
Speaking of touchscreen Symbian-powered smartphones, there are rumblings of a new firmware for the Samsung i8910 OmniaHD, as well..
If you’ve got one of these phones, or a Mac, congratulations. If not, sorry, try again next time.
