Nokia’s Conversations site has been holding a fun contest sort of thing called Pass The Parcel. Each day, a new layer of the wrapping of a mystery parcel was removed, revealing a feature of a mystery device. Today, that device was revealed to be the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, a sexier, albeit less-featured, little brother to the 5800 XpressMusic. This is the third touchscreen smartphone from Nokia, and shows a continued focus on bringing Symbian to more entry-level consumers, which I think is cool.
The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic’s styling reminds me of the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet, with chrome speaker grilles on either side of its 2.9-inch nHD (640x360 pixels) touchscreen display. The phone is powered by S60 5th Edition, which is also known as Symbian^1. There’s a 1000mAh battery in the back, along with a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera and microSD card slot for extra storage.
Being an XpressMusic device, the 5530 XpressMusic features a standard 3.5mm audio port, for listening to your music. Connectivity is a bit odd, with quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and WiFi, but no sign of 3G, which I believe is a first for any Symbian-powered smartphone since the 668x series (correct me if I’m wrong there). The phone does have an accelerometer built in, as well as a revamped homescreen, with a Contact Bar that finally lets me have more than 4 contacts, as well as support for homescreen widgets, apparently and a row of application shortcuts at the same time.
The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is expected to begin shipping in Q3 2009, with pricing set at an astoundingly low EUR 199 (US$277). Color options include Black – Red, White – Blue, Black – Grey, White – Pink, and White - Yellow. Congrats to PhoneDog.com for winning the Pass the Parcel promotion!
