We’ve just gotten word that the Nokia N97 has started shipping, with availability expected soon in 75 countries around the world. I believe this is the widest launch availability in the history of Nokia. Typically, phones are launched in a few countries here and there, with more added on a gradual timeline. They haven’t specified which regions are included in the 75, but I can only hope that North America is in there somewhere.
The Nokia N97 was announced in December 2008 at Nokia World in Barcelona, Spain, where Nokia confirmed the phone would be available in the first half of 2009. Later, at the 2009 Mobile World Congress, also in Barcelona, Nokia confirmed the more specific June timeline, and I’m pleased to see that they’ve hit their mark, right on target.
The Nokia N97 is poised to be the uber-phone, with a 3.5″ nHD (640x360 pixels) resolution touchscreen display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash, built-in GPS and Compass, WiFi, 3G, and a whopping 32GB of internal storage (with a microSD card slot to boot!)
Dotsisx gave us her hands-on impression of the Nokia N97 yesterday, and you can check out this awesome video of the first few N97s being packed up at the Nokia factory. If you’re waiting for the NAM unit, you can pre-order from Amazon for $604, which isn’t bad.
