Nokia believes the growth of their touch-enabled handsets such as the 5800 XpressMusic and N97. They therefore plan to release 4–5 new phones for the Indian market during 2009. A touch interface also means potential revenue in terms of new applications using this technology. The phones that Nokia are planning to release are spread through the different segments, ranging from the mid- to the high-end, focused on the enterprise, music and multimedia market. Their upcoming phones will primarily run the Symbian operating system, while a selected few of the new ones will use the S40 interface. Price with subsidies is planned to be around 10000 Rs, depending on the features of the particular handsets.
According to Nokia India marketing director, Vineet Taneja.
“Studies have indicated that touch phones will account for nearly 40% of the Indian market by 2012. This represents a huge opportunity and we too will evolve our portfolio accordingly. We were waiting for the touch technology to mature before going full steam. Now is the right moment.”
Indeed I see the development of touch-enabled phones growing but I don’t think that touch phones is the future.
