Over the past few years, we’ve frequently wondered when Nokia is going to consolidate its many PC applications into a single app. Currently, there are 4 different PC Suites (Vanilla, Ovi Suite, Nseries, and Eseries), as well as a host of other PC applications that you can download and use to manage various aspects of your phone. Today, at Nokia Beta Labs, the first step towards consolidating all that into a single application is available - Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 (beta).
So, what’s new? For starters, this new Ovi Suite 2.0 is based on QT, rather than .NET. This should not only allow it to not be smoother and less resource hungry, but it should also make it easier for Nokia to being Ovi Suite to Linux and Mac computers, in the future. Note that currently, this beta of Ovi Suite 2.0 is only available for Windows computers.
When you install this new Ovi Suite 2.0 beta, it will automatically exit and uninstall any other Nokia desktop applications, including PC Suite, previous versions of Ovi Suite, and others. There’s also a new ‘Get Connected’ wizard that helps you easily connect your phones to this new Ovi Suite, and it’s *really* simple. However, there’s one weird thing that I captured here. For some reason, you can click boxes to have it synchronize your Contacts, messages, and photos, but if you want to synchronize your calendar, you have to navigate through the tools and whatnot. Why is that?
Know that if you decide to test this out, it’s a beta, and clearly labeled as so. It will likely have plenty of bugs, and the Beta Labs team needs to hear about those, in order to fix them for the final release. You can chime in on their forum here. I’ve got it installed on my machine, and will be giving it a go, as well.
