We’re finally starting to see more free apps land on the Ovi Store, which I think is an awesome thing. Importantly, we’re also starting to see an influx of widgets available through the Ovi Store, which is surely a direct result of the trio of plugins for popular developing environments. There are three that we’re highlighting today, from Bing, Mippin, and Netflix.
The Bing widget only just landed on the Ovi Store, and offers a tabbed search interface for quick access to Web, MobileWeb, News, Image, and Video results. You can also choose which tabs show up, which can make a better experience on smaller screens. The Bing widget is available for all S60 phones, including 3rd Edition, and All About Symbian has a great walkthrough of the main features.
From Mippin we have a handful of widgets, all with homescreen support for the Nokia N97. You can choose from Gossip Buzz, News Buzz, Gaming Buzz, or Tech Buzz, each offering constantly updated headlines from the obvious niche topics. You can use these on the 5800 XpressMusic too, but unfortunately they’re not designed for S60 3rd Edition smartphones like my N79.
Last, but most certainly not least, there’s now a Netflix widget available on the Ovi Store for free. This one is also S60 5th Edition only, which is frustrating, but it offers plenty of features, including the ability to manage your queue, get movie information, and more. It’s nice to have if you’re a Netflix subscriber like me, and I certainly recommend it.
What other widgets have you found, either on the Ovi Store or elsewhere?
