Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Update Brings Homescreen Email

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is one of my favorite phones. It’s fun, cheap, and offers plenty of useful features, and touchscreen web browsing is just plain nice. However, the homescreen on this thing is completely useless, as it’s only able to show 2-3 calendar events and a few other bits of information, leaving the rest of the nHD (360×640 pixels) resolution display blank. Fortunately, a new firmware, v30.0.011, has surfaced, and we finally now have homescreen email notification, which is a start.

The new firmware is currently only available via NSU, and is reportedly only available for a small number of product codes, but nevertheless, it is confirmed available to end users through NSU. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic does have UDP (User Data Preservation), which means it should maintain your files/settings through the update, but it’s always a good idea to back up your critical information anyways, just in case.

You can download NSU directly from Nokia, and we’ll report back if we hear any confirmation of OTA availability.

UPDATE: Looks like it’s beginning to be available OTA for some product codes, including APAC models and Dotsisx’ French unit.

    How the hell do you get the email to show in the homescreen? Its driving me nuts I’ve tried both default and Nokia Messaging email and can’t get it to show :(

    You need to hard-reset your phone after the update so as to get the Email plugin to work!

    Seriously? That’s a massive pain. Can you restore a backup after you’ve hard-reset?

    gerrymoth , no need for a hard reset , just change your homescreen from showing contacts to shorcuts and email should apear by default , let me know if it works.

    Yes after a hard reset you are still able to get all your contacts and such stuff back via a the restore function from nokia pc (or ovi) suite

    Does anybody know the server profile to update a NAM 5800? mine did not come with a server profile for OTA updates and I don’t have a windows pc to use the NSU software.

    There are no OTA server profiles for 5800 NAM, you have to use NSU. But I wouldn’t hold my breath, since 5800 NAM just got an update a few weeks ago.

    I just updated the 5800 nam via ota so its confirmed, I also hard reset my phone and magicaly apeared the email plugin, its a shame I would like widgets, but one can dream

    I just updated the 5800 via ota too, the email plug-in is a go, guess this is something for us, until the big update comes out when the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic hits the streets. At least we know they are working on our beloved 5800XM. :)
