You might have noticed today that things are different here at Symbian-Guru.com. Indeed, after months of thought, we’ve decided to disconnect the forum from our main site. We won’t be completely shutting the forum down, but you will notice that new posts on the front page are no longer posted to the forum, and the old WordPress comment system is back in action.
While this might not be the best overall situation, it solves several problems we have been having with the WordPress/vBulletin bridge. For starters, the bridge was never able to successfully show the correct post author. For most of our news items, this isn’t a big deal. However, when it comes to reviews, editorials, and the like, we noticed that it was confusing for you, the reader, and it’s important to us that you know which Symbian-Guru author has written each story. We have also had issues with the corresponding thread being available initially after a post is published.
Also, we’re planning quite a few changes for Symbian-Guru over the next several months, including a complete visual overhaul that will hopefully declutter this front page and make it easier for you to find the content you’re looking for. This will also include touch-friendly versions of the mobile site and forum. The forum bridge was holding several of these things back, unfortunately, so we had to disable it to move forward.
The Forum is not going away, though. We will continue to post interesting competitions and polls there, and want you to know that it’s a great place to carry on the conversations that might not be related to a specific post on Symbian-Guru.com. The Symbian-Guru Forum was created as a place for Symbian-Guru readers to connect with others, and it will remain as such.
We’re also doing away with the new toolbar that you might have noticed along the bottom of the screen. Enough of you let us know in the feedback that you didn’t care for it, so we won’t be using it any longer. We will be introducing some of the features separately, though, so be on the lookout.
Thanks for everyone who provided feedback, and thanks, as always, for continuing to make Symbian-Guru one of the most-read Symbian resources on the Internet.
