There’s a good compas app in the store too (for free), a little bit more sexy than this one. Works well too.

Must say, the compass app on the ovi store is much nicer than this one.

the compass app mentioned by others above is indeed much more slick than the one discussed in the post. it is provided by the developer ‘Offscreen’ and is quite nice.

this link may or may not work for others – it is the URL from my search in ovi store:

I have tried both, N97Compas has an advantage in that it, like OVI maps can be used in a vertical position – holding the phone in front of you, this failes completely on “Compass Touch” wich goes into random mode if not held horisontaly, but the interface surely looks better on Compass Touch

Correction of my previous post “Compass Touch” can also handle vertical view – i forgot to calibrate it for z-axis :(

so my vote goes to Compass Touch for now.

Btw always remember to turn the phone a few revolutions in all three axis for calibrating each time you start the app to get a good result.

If the N97 had shipped with a compass app, what would all the basement developers do? ;)

In any case, I think the compass app is an entertaining toy at best for vast majority of people – how many of us have, honestly, used a compass in the last 10 years? It is really only really useful in the context of e.g. a mapping app.

Of course, the iPhone compass app has been featured in every freaking video ever made of the 3GS as it looks so damned cool. :D Nothing wrong with that.

And now if OVI Store would work for me I could have tried the Compass Touch as it does look a bit nicer.

Ok so I finally figured out the OVI Store download problem.
I can download and install to phone memory and mass memory, but not to memory card.

(I believe that may be some issues regarding the drive letters)

After trying the Compass Touch as several of you have suggested I found myself back to Compass.
Now the UI on Compass Touch is better and offers more of a navigator interface (similar to boat compasses?) however not having the statuses to see if the built in compass on the N97 was calibrated was a downer.

Compass as in this post shows the different statuses and you can easily see if it lost the calibration. (Which it usually does if you try to hold the N97 vertically).
