Truphone is one of the leading MOIP (Mobile VOIP) services for Symbian-powered phones, and they’ve recently expanded to support other platforms, as well. However, they’re not quick to forget that it all started with Symbian, and so they’ve recently updated to support the newest Symbian-powered smartphones. Truphone is now available on 11 additional models, including my personal favorite, the Nokia N79. Truphone offers MOIP over regular WiFi networks, but also offers Truphone Anywhere, a call-through service.
Rafe at AllAboutSymbian put together a fantastic guide, showing the difference in the two services. Both will likely save you a ton of money, specifically if you do a bit of international calling. The N78, N96, 5800 XpressMusic, 5320 XpressMusic, 6210 Classic, 6220 Navigator and E63 only currently support the Truphone Anywhere service, while the N79, N85 and 5630 XpressMusic are able to support both the WiFi calling and the Truphone Anywhere call-through service.
I’ve used Truphone several times on trips, specifically internationally, to be able to call Mrs. Guru from any WiFi hotspot, without having to purchase a local SIM. It’s definitely a handy application to have in your pocket.
You can download the new update straight through the Ovi Store on most phones, or visit Truphone.com for more details and rate plan information.
