In general I just find this phone hard to get around on. First of all I did not want a phone with all the aptions, I am 72 years of age and only wanted a phone, but was told by Rogers that these are hard to find. They couldn't find so I took this Nokia 6790. I have had nokias before and had no complaints. Is there not something out there for people like me.

Portrait mode is very useful actually. You can scroll through your contacts by clicking the d-pad down and then hit the center button or the call button to place calls without the need to slide it open.

In Canada, the phone is free if you haggle with Rogers a bit (or $29.95 on a regular 2 year term, any cheap calling plan can be used, no data plan needed), all of the email applications (plus many others)are available and preloaded, it also includes the USB cable and 2GB card,.
To have mine shipped to my home (5 days) and set up on the network with a new SIM card cost nothing at all. Free phone, free SIM card, free activation, just a new phone for nothing but a call to Rogers.

I know for certain that they do, they were trying to pull this crap on me after they tried selling me the 6555 (terrible phone btw) after “frying” my subsidyed Cingular 6682. I tend to avoid going into that place other than the yearly sim replacement.

Although after having maid the previous comment I realised the title of the post does say “from AT&T” so I guess as a reader I should knoww its not only about the Surge itself but also about how AT&T likes to run its business. :)

AT&T is known to cripple devices with their crap-ware and being cheap. They probably steal the USB Cables/ Headsets and other accessories and sell them seperately.

For auto-rotate you can disabled it on setting. Also, you do use the phone in the portait mode for the #1 reason, calling people. I don’t remeber having keeping the qwerty slide out when I recieve or make a call. I also play games in portait mode.

I think it’s good to have option, that’s really the best thing about symbian.. a lot of options.. Too confusing for a avg. Joe, but great for smart smartphone users
