Yesterday I shared 5 things that I really hate about the Nokia 6790 Surge. They might have seemed a bit nitpicky, but they definitely get under my skin quickly. Fortunately, though, there are also 5 things that I completely love about this phone, which I’m going to share with you today. This is not a comprehensive review of the phone – that comes tomorrow. Rather, this is the top five features that really make the phone have potential, at least in my view.
1. The size. The Nokia 6790 Surge for AT&T is not much bigger than my beloved Nokia N79, but it packs in some decent features, including a roomy QWERTY keyboard and massively beautiful 1500mAh battery. I’ve moved past chunky phones, which means the svelte form factor is perfect for me.
2. Internal specs. After being disappointed in the low RAM and internal storage of the supposedly flagship Nokia N97, I honestly expected the Nokia 6790 Surge from AT&T to have pitifully low levels, as well. Surprise, surprise, Nokia doesn’t completely have its head in the sand. This bad boy struts out of its box packing a whopping 78MB of RAM on boot, and an equally awesome 117MB of internal storage. These should be considered the bare minimum level of RAM and ROM for *any* Symbian-powered device, without question. As a result of this, the phone is insanely snappy, and able to run a seemingly endless number of applications simultaneously.
3. The QWERTY. While I was disappointed in the lack of extras and shortcuts, the fact remains that this QWERTY keyboard is simply beautiful to type on. The buttons are large, but not oversized, evenly spaced, and incredibly clicky. It’s seriously a dream to type on, and I can’t help but wish I could somehow rig it up to other phones like the N79.
4. Favorite Contacts. I’m going to let you gaze upon this screenshot for a few seconds.
No, this is not a photoshop job – the Nokia 6790 Surge from AT&T is the first Symbian-powered device from Nokia to FINALLY feature a ‘Favorites’ tab in the contacts application, where you can specify a shortlist of contacts that you…..contact….often. This list is then only a keypress away, and makes phone calls and SMS so much easier. If I could figure out a way to extract this and install it on all my other phones, I totally would (hint hint, Nokia).
5. 1500mAh battery. Seriously, Nokia should just quit manufacturing all other batteries, and focus on this one, exclusively. Sure, it makes devices a bit bigger, but, well, it’s 1500mAh. Even with Gravity and Nokia Messaging running constantly on 3G in the background and other miscellaneous applications running periodically throughout the day, I’m easily able to make it through the end of the day, and on into the second day. Part of this is thanks to the smaller 2.4-inch display, but it’s still really nice to have.
These are just the top 5 things that I really love about this phone. Together, they make using the Nokia 6790 Surge from AT&T a complete pleasure, and really add a little extra to the phone. It’s definitely not a comprehensive list, and obviously there are other great features, but these are the ones that stand out, in my opinion. Tomorrow, I’ll have a full review of the hardware of the phone, covering all aspects in depth.
Are these 5 things important to you?
