Thanks for the clear writeup. I am attempting to make my Nokia E61i to read unicode characters of a non-english language. I am aware (I guess) that Nokia E61i, is a s60v3 platform which has unicode support. My aim is just to read a plain text file that contains a mix of English and non English characters. This text file reads well in my computer (has Windows XP sp3). When the file is opened in phone, only English characters are displayed properly. Non English characters are substituted with a box.

I understand this due to the absence of proper font file. I made a folder in C:datafonts and placed the appropriate (Latha.TTF) font file.

My aim is not to replace the default font, but rather to supplement it.

    Any help please?

Funny, yesterday I tweetet ricky that I recommend installing the fonts on E:, not on C., just for the case that some font setting won’t work.

When you have some “bad” font on E. just remove the storage card, restart the phone with the default system font delete the font via a card reader. When you have the fonts on C: you have to hard reset your phone.

Just like it happened to Stephen.

Seriously: In times of 16GB storage cards no avarage hardcoreuserphonefreakjoe will have the need to swap storage cards. If you do have, copy the fonts folder on each of your cards and you’re good to go.

First of all: copy font to E:DataFonts first and check does it work on device. And if it does, then copy it to C:DataFonts and use. This gives option to recovery when FontRouter is not able to use font (Stephen’s problem).

@daClaus – that wouldn’t have helped Stephen, as he is using the N95 8GB, which has built-in storage – there’s no option for him to remove the memory card.

Sure, with the N95 8GB a reset was the only way to solve this.
With any other mobile with memory card support there could have been a much more convenient solution.

People who e.g. have Psiloc language products or Mobisystems MSPhrases might want to manually edit the fontrouter.ini file.
It’s as simply as putting in
DisableFontFile= “Path to the font file”

For S60v3 handsets FontRouter and FontRouteManager can be installed in memory card and will still work. FonRouterManager makes it much easier to have a dedicated folder for fonts instead of using the X:SystemResourceFonts path which is less accessable for e.g N95 8Gb.

    @bobby68

It does work on the N97.
Make sure you put the font files in C:DataFonts and then install FontRouter. You only need FontRouter as FontRouteManager won’t work optimally.

Simply set ‘FontRouterMan’ to ‘Disabled’ (it’s the 2nd option when you open the app) and then reboot your phone.

man how to copy fonts ??? i mean i send fonts from my computer to my n79 via bluetooth …..and i dnt know hw to copy them to C drive or E drive …. help plsss …..

  • http://www.symbian-guru.com khouryrt

Either copy them straight to ur memory card using the usb cable and choosing Data Transfer mode when it asks u if u want PC Suite or Data Transfer… or if u choose to use Bluetooth, use a program like X-Plore. It's a free app with a 3sec nagging screen, but under Tools > Messaging, u'll find all ur bluetooth files. Just copy them to the memory card.

  • ZeDestructor

I used to do this the old-fashioned way, by adding fonts into the E:ResourceFonts folder with the same name as the stock font. The Downside being the loss of a few symbols and occasionally International font support

doesn't work with all fonts on my n81… when i use some fancy fonts, the device just doesn't boot up at all sometimes, just shows the nokia screen and a “boot-up failed. Please contact retailer”. I'm sure it's a hardware problem like low RAM or slow proc but apart from that, the amt of customisation it offers is amazing
