I was all set to publish a full announcement of Nokia’s new Booklet 3G, which was announced this morning at Nokia Conversations. The thing is Nokia’s much-rumored entry to the netbook market, and the specifications that were pre-released today are quite impressive. The Nokia Booklet 3G has a 10.1-in screen, all-aluminum body, HD display and HDMI output, as well as a claimed 12-hour battery life. This thing appears to run Windows 7, and comes with Ovi services pre-installed, such as Ovi Suite and Ovi Files. It sounds super-impressive, and my first reaction this morning was ‘OMG, I want one’.
However, the more I’ve thought about it, I already *have* a Nokia Booklet 3G on my desk. It’s called an Asus 1000HE EeePC, and it is currently running Windows 7, and I have Ovi Suite installed, so I can communicate with my phones via Bluetooth, and it’s got a built-in webcam, so I can do video chats. I get roughly 7-8 hours of battery life, depending on my settings, and I can tether my phone to get 3G access anywhere I want.
Of course, there are a few features on the Nokia Booklet 3G that my 1000HE doesn’t have. For starters, the hot-swappable SIM card slot, the A-GPS, and the advertised 12-hour battery life. The Nokia Booklet’s HD display and HDMI-output are also impressive, for now. The thing is, most of the established netbook players (Asus, Dell, HP, etc) haven’t fully announced their next crop - most of which will also be powered by Intel’s Atom Z530 processor, which is what powers the HD parts and offers the incredible battery life.
Given that we don’t know how much the Nokia Booklet 3G will cost, nor do we know when it will actually be available, I’m hesitant to say ‘I want one’ for sure. Unless Nokia is able to bundle some sort of exclusive software capabilities, the hardware is nothing impressive or unexpected in the netbook market.
However, I do rather like the idea of a Nokia-branded complete solution, and hopefully, this means Nokia will have spent some major time and resources improving their desktop software. Ovi Suite on my 1000HE, under Windows 7, is still extremely slow and buggy.
