Earlier today, Nokia announced the 5800 Navigation Edition, a re-release of the popular 5800 XpressMusic. The 5800 Navigation Edition will come in a classy chrome and black color scheme, and includes a lifetime drive and walk license for Ovi Maps, which is quite a good deal. Also included in the sales package is a car charger and a mounting solution to set the phone up in your car, which is quite a nice package, overall. Nokia expects the 5800 Navigation Edition to be available in Q3, priced at EUR285 (US$408) before taxes and subsidies.
At face value, this appears to be little more than Nokia attempting to milk the 5800 for all that it can, and that might be part of what’s at play here. However, I’d like to read a little bit more into this. For starters, the 5800 Navigation Edition is a phenomenal bargain, given that the current 5800 XpressMusic can be picked up from Amazon - unlocked - for $370. Basically, for an extra $30, you get a lifetime navigation license, car charger, and car mounting solution, not to mention the classy chrome design.
From my perspective, this move shows that Nokia isn’t finished with the 5800, specifically in terms of firmware. This is a major deal, as the current firmware leaves much to be desired, including a fix for the homescreen email notification (mine stopped showing, and Nokia Messaging has confirmed it’s a problem with the firmware), lack of kinetic scrolling, and other niceties that the N97 and upcoming 5530 XpressMusic both have. With Nokia re-releasing this phone, I’m almost convinced we’ll see some new firmware updates, and I’m glad to see that, as I really enjoy using my 5800 XpressMusic. The data sheet also seems to indicate there will be a NAM variant available, as well, which is awesome.
Here’s a video showing the phone in action. Note that you can currently put Ovi Maps 3.0 on your 5800 XpressMusic easily, but you won’t get that pretty chrome bezel, nor will you get a lifetime license for Ovi Maps (which I actually really enjoy using).
