Every recent Nokia device has been shipping with Share Online built into it, that allows instant uploads of images and videos to Ovi Share, Flickr and Vox. The problem is that the service support stops there, and there is no easy way to upload your media to Facebook, YouTube, Picasa, or any of the other known media sites. Pixelpipe solved that issue a long time ago, by bringing one add-on to Share Online that allows you to send media to multiple destinations or pipes. While we, on Symbian-Guru, are avid users and evangelists of the service, we have to admit that creating another account online and managing it, then bringing the installation to your device, might be a bit too much for someone who just wants to upload photos to one service, like Facebook, or Picasa. Enter Furtiv.
Furtiv have recently released their beta service, which includes Facebook, Picasa, YouTube and Twitter, or basically the main missing pieces of Share Online. All you have to do is head over to http://furtiv.mobi on your phone’s browser and click on the links to the service that you want to add. A configuration file will be downloaded and added instantly to your Share Online. You can then open the application and see that your new service is “Ready for activation”. Clicking on that will take you through the rest of the activation process where you enter your account details. Then, whenever you want to upload a media item, you open it in the Gallery, then select Send, Upload, choose your service, add a title and tags if you want, then upload. Here are a couple of screenshots that should ease you through the process.
Note that clicking on any of Facebook, Youtube or Picasa in Share Online’s main application view will launch the mobile version of the service website, whereas with the Twitter plugin, you get a menu view to Upload as well as view avatar pictures from your contacts through the Timeline, Mentions and Direct Messages. Furtiv is still under beta, so if you notice any issues, report them to the Furtiv team on Twitter: @furtiv.
If you’re wondering about the difference between Pixelpipe and Furtiv, it’s in the user they target. Pixelpipe makes it easy to upload to several destinations simultaneously and offers a lot of control in terms of upload Albums, routing tags, and such, but you have to have a registered Pixelpipe account to use it. It’s also available on several platforms, such as a nice Firefox plug-in. Furtiv, on the other hand, aimes to make it dead simple for an everyday user to upload media to one of his favorite services, like Facebook or Youtube, without him having to worry about creating a separate account and managing it.
Furtiv basically fills the void between the limited capability of Share Online’s official plugins and Pixelpipe’s unlimited potential. Personally, I’m sticking with Pixelpipe, but what about you? Are you a regular Share Online user, a Pixelpipe user, or does Furtiv solve your problem by giving a solution in the middle?
