Nokia spends insane amounts of money on research for itself, but sometimes, it aligns with others to push the industry in certain directions, or to help a standard take hold. Recently, Nokia announced that it has joined in on two such initiatives, joining others for wireless charging and a mobile high-definition link for phones.
Wireless charging is something I think is going to be fantastic, and I can’t wait to see it become commonplace. The Wireless Power Consortium that Nokia has joined includes heavyweights such as Olympus, Philips, Sanyo, Texas Instruments, Duracell, and Samsung. Duracell already makes their own wireless charging pad, though it’s not quite available to buy as of yet.
The mobile high-definition link is something that Nokia joins in with Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, and Silicon Image to develop a new connector for mobile devices that will make connecting to HDTVs and other displays easier. The group is taking on HDMI, DisplayLink, and the new LightPeak, but the members are big enough that this new connector, whenever it is revealed, just might take off. Notice also that Nokia, Samsung, and Sony are all currently manufacturing Symbian-powered smartphones, as well.
