Both the Nokia N86 8MP and the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic have recently received updated firmware, bringing a few fixes here and there, as well as other important updates. The Nokia N86′s firmware brought quite a few speed updates, as well as the new facial recognition ability in the camera and an indicator to show where the camera is focused. There is also now an Ovi Chat plugin on the homescreen, as was shown in the press photos, allowing you to see how many friends are online and who incoming messages are from.
N86 8MP v20.115 Firmware
Other improvements in the v20.115 firmware for the Nokia N86 8MP include a real Ovi Store client, updates to the web browser, and the Nokia Messaging that is built-in on the phone. Also, Ovi Maps was updated, including faster calibration of the digital compass, which is definitely a good thing. You can get a full changelog from our friends at AllAboutSymbian. If you own an N86 8MP, you definitely want to snag this update quickly.
5530 XpressMusic v11.0.054 Firmware
The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic was updated to v11.0.054, and unfortunately there are not too many changes in this update. Gerry from NokiaAddict.com notes that his homescreen seems snappier, but aside from that, I’m unable to detect any differences, either. If you’re a 5530 XpressMusic owner, you may not be in such a rush to install this update, honestly.
I’m rather impressed with the new features added in the Nokia N86 8MP’s new firmware, honestly. Nokia has definitely made an awesome phone even better, and I hope they do the same with the N97′s promised v20 firmware, coming sometime in October.
You can update your phone’s firmware by pressing *#0000# from the standby screen and then choosing ‘Options, Check for Updates’ or you can use Nokia’s Software Update tool. While both the N86 8MP and 5530 XpressMusic feature UDP (User Data Preservation), it is recommended that you backup any critical information prior to applying the update.
