Unfortunately… the UK misses out once again, remember v12 isn’t even available overe here!!!

Has anyone with an NAM version seeing an update to Nokia Messaging? I didn’t have it installed and the update didn’t install it. If you did get an update, what enhancements did it bring?

  • rodak69

Ricky, I’m thinking about buying N97 now, but after watching your video in your software review of N97 I’m pretty confused… http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2009/06/nokia-n97-review-software.html I’ll be greatfull if you’ll make a new, full review of 2.0 software, aiming at the same features that you showed in your last video to see if there are a real improvements in this version.

I don’t currently have an N97 on hand to do so, but our own Wampyre does, and we’ll see about getting him to do a video showing the changes. He’ll also be chiming in here with any changes he notices.

How come Orange UK gets the update and generic UK doesn’t?

Still no update for my UK unbranded N97 (0585162)

  • Lloyd

I just did the update and what I find is that applications like Ovi Chat and Vlingo are added and cannot be removed even if I don’t want them. Vlingo is not a free version either, yet there is no way to remove it. I also cannot find Nokia Messaging anywhere on the phone. I did not have it before and even looking in the Installed Applications listings I don’t find it.

    What did i find?

    1. I lost C: drive space and I see no benefits added there.
    2. The amount of RAM has not changed.
    3. Ovi Maps is the same, including a longer than desired GPS link time.
    4. Kinetic scrolling is not throughout the phone but there is more of it (doesn’t work in X-plore).
    5. Photos works a lot like the beta Photo Browser so I can now remove that to save some disk space.
    6. Touch response seems to be less-responsive as opposed to the advertised more responsive. It may be because the menus now have kinetic scrolling and any time you try and select a folder it tries to scroll through the list of folders (may be my fat thumbs)

Time will tell if this update has really done anything. If my initial impressions don’t become changed in the next few days then I will wait for the N900 to go through it’s initial issues and a few upgrades and then I will replace the N97.

  • Mike

Currently no update avaialble for my N97. (0585732). Anyone know when it will become available?

  • Payaxy

Oi, Nokia, I hope you didn’t forget about my 5800 and millions like it you sold all around the world. We are waiting… ;)

  • meggman

just did the update, and now the OVI store is pretty much unusable. if i try to scroll on a list of apps, it immediately picks it up as a click, and opens up the page for the app. i can’t believe they didn’t test this out!

another problem i noticed is when you are trying to enter a web address in the browser, and it gives you the .com, .net, .org list to pick from, it is un-clickable.

too many fails for such an anticipated firmware release…

  • krisq

    ^^
Go to store.ovi.com via browser and download the newest OVI store app.

  • Lloyd

@meggman I just did a hard reset and, in addition to getting tons of room and my C; drive (48m after reinstalling everything except QuickOffice), I find that I have the older version of Ovi Store. I found out as when I went into it after the reset I was asked if I wanted to update it to the current version (yes I still have f/w V20) and I said no. Works fine.

  • naypalm

    w00t!

I’m happy cos widgets are working after a very long time. Now I can proudly present my phone. Before everybody was asking where are the widgets they saw on TV advertisement.

Wish Nokia would let the users to decide what programs they want to their phones. Vlingo is waste of memory for me and I know there is no memory to waste in this phone’s memory.

Still, I’m positive and I believe N97 is going to the better way.

Nothing for the UK AGAIN. Bumber.

  • Slipurson

I updated, everything works fine, and imho the phone is faster and feels “better” to use, didnt get anymore free space, but i have just recently made a hard reset (due to nokia-screen-freeze) so i didnt feel like doin it again.

As for RAM, i didnt get anymore free when i boot the phone, its around 44-45 MB free then, but i tried starting Camera, N-Gage, Palringo, TweetS60, Opera Mini, Music Player, default webbrowser, a word-document with quickoffice and Nokia Messaging, so all in all 9 quite memoryhungry apps plus Daves Gadget and S60 News widgets running on the homescreen and bluetooth on (not that it makes any big diff.) I had 7MB free RAM and i still didnt get any “out of memory”-error until i actually started a game in n-gage :), but multitasking still worked well.

Unfortunately as I just recently sent my N97 for repairs I can’t benefit from the updated firmware as of yet.

From what I’ve read so far it’s best to wipe everything out.
One neat thing for those that use N-gage is that the client now is included as well as the OVI Maps 3.1 with 3D Maps and the Vlingo application.

Users of Nokia Messaging seems to not find this application on their handsets anymore. Besides that there are some quirks here and there, with the small benefit of kinetic scrolling throughout the phone as well as the better support for cover art in the music player.

  • Mike

I had to first do a debranding of my N97, then I could upgrade to ver 2.0. Everything works 100%. Very happy!

  • frederico

hmm i did get more space on C: but my ram is unusable.
connecting through wi-fi, i cant keep more than 2 of these apps open: ovi store, web, opera, gmail, gravity, sw update. kinda sucks

    anybody else experiencing this?

    Software 20.0.019
The ringtone I have set (Crank.mp3) for general profile doesn’t play everytime. Sometimes my phone plays Nokia Tune and I get to hear comments like “very special ringtone you’ve got there:-)”.

I changed the ringtone to other and then back to make sure everything is ok.

Anyone else got this “feature” after FW update?

  • Don_Uz

I have an RM-505. The product code on the back of my phone is 0529803. I have entered it on the website to check why does my phone doesn’t get any updates through OTA or NSU. The website says that I have an n73.

    Question 1: What the hell?
Question 2: How can I know the real product code and know when I can get an update from my 12 to 2.0?

  • Abacus

I’ve been a loyal Nokia user for the past 10 years and the N97 is the last nokia I will buy. I’ve had the phone 3 months now and am on my 3rd replacement handset – memory management issues, freezing, dropping calls….
really regret getting the N97… wont make that mistake again.
