This morning, Nokia announced the new 6700 Slide, which oddly has very little in common with the 6700 classic that was announced back in January. The 6700 Slide is actually a smartphone, powered by S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, whereas its dumber brother is powered by Nokia’s S40 user interface.
The 6700 Slide is actually quite a full-featured device, though, with quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and tri-band 3G (900/1900/2100MHz or 850/1900/2100MHz) for connectivity nearly anywhere. The phone also packs a familiar 5 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a dual-LED flash, along with video capture at up to 15 frames per second.
The Nokia 6700 Slide is quite a small device, measuring in at 95.2mm x 46mm x 15.9mm (3.7in x 1.8in x .63in) and only weighs 110g (3.9oz), so it should slide into your pocket quite easily. The phone will also be available in a handful of vibrant colors, including aluminum, pink, petrol-blue, red, lime, and purple. There is a built-in FM radio, as well as a microSD card slot for up to 16GB of storage. The tiny 2.2-inch QVGA (240×320 pixel) resolution display won’t turn any heads, though, nor will the 2.5mm audio port.
Nokia expects the 6700 Slide to be available in Q1 2010, priced at EUR 160 (US$ 240).While this is a nice phone for the price, Nokia needs to get some clarity when it comes to naming their phones – having two 6700s, one a smartphone and the other a dumbphone, is going to really get confusing for consumers and retailers alike. However, this could also be the beginning of Symbian taking over for S40, creeping into the low-to-mid end. What do you think?
