Lately, there has been a buzz of applications that aim to modify the Symbian Homescreen, by adding social media aspects, news and weather, like vHome and Flyscreen. The latest such discovery to fall under our radar is HipLogic.
When launched, HipLogic brings a full new UI to Symbian, with the regular date, battery and reception notifiers, as well as Search, Widgets, Notifications, a new Menu and a Dialer. Included widgets are WeatherBug, Twitter, Facebook, Clock and Finance, though you can only choose to display one at a time on the homescreen, which is silly on S60 5th Edition devices and leaves the screen almost empty. Search engines are Google, Wikipedia, Yelp and Yahoo! and are easily accessed from the top of the homescreen. As for the Dialer, it includes your favorite Contacts, Call log, Messages, VoiceMail and a list of your contacts, with the option to type in any number and call or message them.
HipLogic also includes a full new Menu layout, with some bundled applications, like WeatherBug, Finance, Twitter, Facebook, Sky Sports, SkyNews, Times, MTV UK, and more, as well as an RSS Reader. The Twitter and Facebook functionality are rather limited compared to standalone offers, but they could be enough for the casual user. As for the different other news apps, they work really well and let you choose what category to cover, as well as send notifications to your homescreen when something new is published, a feature that I’m totally loving!
There’s also a bundled App Store where you can download more applications, like Nimbuzz or a custom Disney application. The Settings area lets you control HipLogic’s connectivity options, alerts, and other aspects of it.
The Menu layout of HipLogic is also fully customizable, and supports transition effects. You can add icons to any of your other 3rd-party applications, as well as remove some of the existing ones if you want.
You can watch a demo of HipLogic running on a Nokia E71x to view the different features in action:

HipLogic is free for you to get, so head over to m.hiplogic.com to download it from your phone. It works on S60 3rd Edition as well as Symbian^1 touchscreen phones, and supports either a landscape or a portrait orientation.
I’ve been running HipLogic for a few hours both on the Nokia E72 and the X6, and find it has amazing potential. It’s a bit slow and sometimes needs to reset due to low resources, but the UI is beautiful and refreshing. If these small issues were fixed, and the homescreen got multiple widget support, this could be a real killer software.
