Nokia recently released firmware updates for the N86 8MP, E72, and my beloved 5800 XpressMusic. They also updated the Nokia Software Updater application, making it fully compatible with Windows 7 (eliminating the need for you to follow our helpful walkthrough on how to install and use Nokia Software Updater on Windows 7).
The Nokia N86 8MP v21.006 firmware is a rather small one, mainly full of maintenance fixes and other small updates. According to reader Jamaalism, the music player bug, where paused music resumes playback after a call has ended is still present. Users have reported that the phone seems to be a bit quicker, though that always seems to be the case after a good firmware update. The Nokia N86 8MP does include UDP (User Data Preservation), so your data should be safe through the update process. However, it’s always a good idea to back up any critical information, just in case.
The Nokia E72 also got a small update, to 22.007, and again, there’s not really much to see here, aside from some stability improvements and miscellaneous bug fixes. As with the Nokia N86 8MP, the Nokia E72 features UDP, so your personal data should be safe and sound, though again, we recommend that you back it up anyways, just to be on the safe side.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic firmware v40.0.005 is the real headliner here, though. The new firmware finally adds kinetic scrolling to the venerable touchscreen smartphone, along with an improved homescreen, similar to the one found on the 5530 XpressMusic, and the keyboard now automatically switches between QWERTY and T9 when you rotate the display. Sadly, the update apparently hasn’t been made available to NAM product codes, though. You can check out the full list of available product codes at NokiaUsers.net, as usual. The 5800 XpressMusic also features UDP, so you’re good to go there, but backup anyways.
I’m still waiting for a new firmware for my Nokia N97 that will cleanup a few loose ends not fixed by the already awesome v20 firmware. Rumor has it there is a v21 firmware coming shortly, so here’s hoping.
