When Nokia announced it was killing off N-Gage, I assumed that also meant the game development department inside Nokia was being killed off. On the contrary, it seems as though gaming is alive and well at Nokia, with the announcement of Climate Mission earlier today, and now this sneak preview of Ovi Maps Racing, shown off at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ovi Maps Racing is, as the name suggests, a combination of Ovi Maps and a racing game, with a really cool twist - you can race in your own neighborhood! Yeah, that’s right, the application is able to use maps from the Ovi Maps application to build a custom racing track for you to navigate. You can either use your current location or browse to anywhere in the world and then choose the twists and turns in your track. Ovi Maps Racing then builds the track and lets you go to town on it.
There’s no official word on multiplayer options, but I’m crossing my fingers I can challenge my friends with an SMS invitation to race on our home turf, or invite Dotsisx and Wampyre to race around my block a few times.
Here’s the official game trailer, though unfortunately Nokia hasn’t come forth with a hard availability date:
