One of the things that I’ve heard requested for the Symbian platform since I got my first Nokia 6620 so many years ago is the ability to edit the custom predictive text dictionary stored within the device. We can easily add words to this dictionary, but removing them is basically impossible without erasing everything, and there’s no way to easily transfer your custom dictionary from phone to phone. It can be a real issue, especially if you love T9 as much as I do.
Enter the Nokia Custom Dictionary application from Nokia Beta Labs. Nokia’s never been one for creative naming, so the function of this app is pretty obvious - it lets you manage the custom dictionary within your phone. With Nokia Custom Dictionary, you can add, edit, or remove individual words in your phone’s custom predictive dictionary, which is awesome. The best part of the app, however, is the import/export function.
With the import/export function, you can take a few minutes to setup the perfect custom dictionary, then export it for safekeeping. Now, when you get a new phone or have to hard reset your existing phone, you simply install Nokia Custom Dictionary, import your list, and boom goes the dynamite, you’re on your way.
This is only one more in a line of brilliant applications available from the Nokia Beta Labs. However, remember it’s on the BETA labs for a reason - there might be bugs here and there, and please report them when you find them, so the team can improve on them. Currently, most S60v3 and S60v5 devices are supported, though there might be issues here and there.
I really can’t get over how awesomely useful this app is going to be. It is instantly among my top 5 required downloads for all of my Symbian phones. It is my sincere hope that Nokia contributes this app to the Symbian Foundation for inclusion into the Symbian platform.
