When Nokia announced that all the premium content in Ovi Maps was going to be free, we learned that due to the pitiful amounts of internal app storage on the device, owners of the original N97 would have to wait for a new firmware. Through that, we quickly learned of the pending v21 firmware update which has finally been made available over NSU today.
The new v21 firmware brings numerous bugfixes and improvements, including smoother scrolling and more stable voice calling. The music player has also been updated slightly, for a better performance there. Micky at NokiaUsers.net is reporting improved RAM usage, as well, which is definitely a welcome update.
Although the Nokia N97 includes UDP (User Data Preservation), it’s still a good idea to backup any critical personal information before downloading and applying the update, just in case. Also, this update is not currently available OTA, so you’ll need to find someone with a Windows computer to use Nokia’s NSU, which you can download here.
