Waze, our favorite social navigation application, just let us know that users will see some new road goodies on the maps, starting today. The new road goodies – heart-shaped ‘love balloons’ and cupid’s arrow, will replace the holiday-themed candy canes and snowflakes. The Waze team says there will be more of these on the maps, too, in preparation for an awesome new feature coming soon – local standings.
Currently when you use Waze, your points and ranking are shown globally – where you rank against all of the Wazers in the entire world. While that’s kind of cool (particularly if you’re high up there), it also kind of sucks if you’re real far behind. In the near future, though, you’ll be able to see local rankings. How do you stack up against other Wazers in your local area?
For U.S. and Canadian users, though, there’s another big deal – treasure chests. These road goodies have the potential to offer real-life goodies, including movie passes or boxes of chocolate! Wazers in the U.S. or Canada can expect to see these treasure chests pop up anytime between today and February 14th, so you’d better start driving if you want to win.
You can get our full walkthrough of Waze here, and don’t forget that you can also check-in on Foursquare on your Symbian phone through Waze, as well. Simply point your phone’s browser to http://m.waze.com to download the client straight to your phone.
(Apologies for the iPhone screenshots – rest assured, the road goodies and treasure chests are there for Symbian users, too!)
