Hey. that’s what I wanted to write! :)

Nokia already announced that their pushing Symbian to mid and low tier devices. Maemo (or MeeGo) is the future for high end smartphones and mobile computers and as devin already mentioned it already has all the functionallity you want build in! Thanks to the community it even has features that go beyond what the competiton is having right now. One example for that is shortcutd, a handy little app that lets you use the proximity sensor as customizeable button. The one and only downside is that there are very little decent games available, but one could argue that with the buttload of emulators available you literally have thousands of games available.

  • devinbalentina

and the N900 with Maemo/MeeGo pretty much has all of these things covered already.

  • coopere

you are right. the n900 is a beauty. a powerhouse. all the things symbian wishes it was. but like the 9th point mentioned about symbian going open source and hopefully symbian^2 or ^3 will get to devices like the n97, i sincerely hope so. this will make their owners very happy puppies, who shelled out hundreds of dollars to get a hold of them.

  • vinitneo

I hope the platform update thing works, I'd like to update N97 to symbian^2. very good post, I agree with you on every point.

  • Ted

Interesting perspective Ricky, thanks! On a different note… Any chance of that N97 Mini review series appearing soon?

  • Erik

I've known this for over a year. Glad you finally found out as well, better late than never :)

  • Jim

Yeah, except it doesn't support AT&T's 3G band in the U.S., only T-Mobile, which is not an option for many (puny coverage). Buying a pricey N900 super- phone to just run it on Edge is also not a satisfactory option.

    Ah, well.

in fact there's a way to change the default programs for web browsing, playing music etc in symbian ^1. go to settings>phone>application settings>default applications,, although i know that it might not be as easy as on the android. it's annoying that it's hidden so deep inside and it's even difficult for geeks to dig it up.

    1. It is possible on Symbian via file types/protocols associations (in the same way it is done on the desktop). You can modify with a signed Y-Tasks app, for example, which is free. Particularly with Opera Mobile the problem is that Opera opens the blank start page even if the URL was supplied.

    2. Default browser leaves much to be desired and it is very difficult to use on S60v3, having only D-pad as a navigation. Still, this is the only mobile browser that shows flash content “from the box”. Sometimes it's a saviour feature.

    3. Starting from the FP1, two screens are available. Also you can organize more screens with 3rd party utilities.

    4. Here I agree, the integration is poor on Symbian. Still, personally for me, that's good. I am not sure if it would be really comfortable to use Android for a person without a Google account. On Symbian, use can use Ovi, Google, whatever, or use just your own PC securely.

    5. Notifications about new messages, connections established etc. are also show in the information bar at the top of the screen. I miss GPS indicator though.

Other points are not relevant for me, so stopping for now.

    写得不错 :)

    键盘交互方面建议再用一下iPhone;

    不过个人更偏向于BlackBerry的触摸交互,有触感反馈~

  • kmmerwana

Dude if by any chance you have been able to change the default application, please do all of us a favor by letting us know.

  • http://twitter.com/webmage Leyla M

While most of your points are valid, I'd like to point out that (5) Notifications isn't really correct. I have a Sony Ericsson P1i Symbian smartphone, with a thin, sleek notifications bar at the top just as the Android does.

  • Gary

Am I wrong in thinking Symbian does have a notifications dropdown, well at least on the Vivaz. If you see the notification icons in the status bar at top if you click on one of these a panel drops down, with links to all your notifications, including alarm and connectivity.

Only appears for a set time and can be quite fiddly to bring up but none the less it is there.

Sorry cant take a screenshot as pressing a key makes it disappear

  • Daevyd

Great article. I'm shopping around for a new phone and I'm leaning towards an Android device mainly out of curiosity sake. I've used Symbian on an E90 and must say that I was pleased with the results (the phone, however, was utter crap).

  • http://cellphonetrackers.org GPS tracker

Symbian is more or less outdated, and Android really does a good, rather a better job, but I still miss Symbian.

  • Anonymous

I dont agree with all of that. I hate Android on screen keyboard. It doesnt have good T9 alphanumeric keyboard with predictive text.

  • Shreemant

Google had always been stealing data by providing all these always logged in feature. So its very hard to trust again this time using a google based OS as u won’t know if that OS is syncronising ur whole data with their server records too. Also Many of the Features are already available in Blackberry. and above all the ease for Service post purchase can never be best like Nokia. So whatever comes and goes, Nokia still ROCKS…….

  • strawberry

    How about viewing pdf file?

  • Shubhamchaturvedi07

recently i’ve changed default browser to opera mobile

  • The_omen1990

In symbian 3 u can set opera as ur default browser….it’s dere in the settings…u can set various apps as default for various tasks, so d very first point dat u make isn’t really a fact now.
