Hey Ricky, Is there a discount for those who already have SPB weather ?

  • Beow

What, nothing for S60v3? Pity, could use something like that on my E72. Guess I’m sticking to Voyager Home.

  • Angiepea

Hi, thanks for the review, having read it i downloaded it almost immediately. My Isms works fine though !! I get the inbuilt isms notification when a new message comes through and have put the Isms widget on the home screen so when i want to write a new message i just click on that.

I use the emoze email service, and that remains unchanged too.

Although it's sucked the life out of my ram it doesn't seem to be slowing down or lagging anywhere

    Thanks
    Angie

[...] NZ , what I know it work for WiMmo also , The Guru decided to test SPB Mobile Shell on his Nokia N97 to really get a good idea of the potential performance issues, given the N97’s pathetic choice of processor, RAM, and internal storage. He figure, if it runs decently on the N97, it’ll run decently on dang near any Symbian-powered smartphone out there. From and more SPB Mobile Shell v3.5 For Symbian Rocks | Symbian-Guru.com [...]

    awesome, thanks!

    Grabbing some Ram back.

I've been averaging around 15mb free ram with using SPB shell and just a few other apps at the same time (operational apps, emoze and mykeylock. I removed everything off the Nokia inbuilt homescreen as i forgot that the normal homescreen would be running in the background as usual, and managed to claw back 10mb ram, so currently running everything i need with roughly 24-25mb free ram.

Try Handy Shell. I love it on the E71. It also uses handy clock, handy calender, handy profiles and handy weather as plug ins.

  • chraus

The eye candy makes a nice change from the usual Symbian OS, bit more work needs to done to integrate other email systems and the inclusion of a music player widget as you have to chnage into the music player or use the remote to play, pause, change tracks etc.

  • Auntiewiv

Running Mobile Shell on my SE Vivaz, no memory issues to worry about for me! Loved the app the minute I tried it. So much better than the default S60 homescreen. The default email thing is a pain when i want to send a new message as I use Roadsync against Gmail and it keeps asking me to setup an email account. Apart from that, more widgets please ( twitter, facebook?) and I’m in homescreen heaven!

  • nonpafos

    20% I think
you should ask SPB support about it :)

  • Daniel

I can not agree. This shell eats too much resources. And it leaves the default string at the top of the screen.

  • http://www.rickycadden.com Ricky Cadden

It leaves the default string so that you can see your battery level, signal strength, and system indicators like Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.

  • enrique

Bought the software. Works well on the 5800. After a lot of time playing around with the settings , I finally started to like it. Needs more widgets, although the add a “shortcut” helps a lot. Does eat up some memory.
Overall a nice app. but improvements needed.

  • http://www.rickycadden.com Ricky Cadden

Glad you like it. It's definitely one of those apps that you hate at first, but once you give it a chance, you really start to see the value in it.

  • mbrett

Like the app, but stoppped using it because of three shortfalls.
    1) Does not recognise NM e-mail mailboxes unlike standard e-mail widget.
    2) Cannot handle rotate to landscape if you aximize usage of himescreen space.
    3) Does not support folders in application view.
If it wasn't for these issues on N97 would rock. Plan to review soon.

I installed the trial on my wife's 5230 and have been playing around with it for awhile. I have been trying to figure out how to add a dialer widget. I can't find a dialer in any of the lists or folders anywhere after clicking add widget. I did find the 1 touch dialing, but not just a normal dial pad. However, I did finally figure out that just hitting the green call button anywhere brings up the dial pad. I am not positive, but i think before installing spb shell, hitting the green button brought up the call history (dialed, received, missed calls).
Is there any way to get one of the tabs onto a homescreen? for instance, if i wanted my 5th homescreen to be my call log all the time, is there any way to do that, or is the only way to get to the call log by hitting the tabs button and scrolling through the carousel until you get to the call log?

  • angiepea

    Hi,

To get a dialer icon on your homescreen go to :-

Grey square task box bottom right corner – add widget – shortcut – tools – then scroll down a bit and you'll see dialler.

To get your call history log icon go to :-
Grey task box bottom right corner – add widget – shortcut – programs – and then scroll down and select log.

Hope this helps, i'm sure someone might have a better idea but at the moment this is all i have, but i hope it helps you :)

    Hi there,
Nice article, I have niticed that you have custom backgrounds for contacts, weathert, etc. so I assume that you have modded spb shell a little, If I'm right, could you please share how.
    Thanks!

  • Christy N97 user

Should i try this my phone says Memory Full close some apps when trying to open photos while running only the shell?

  • angiepea

    Hey Christy

That happens to me sometimes, but only in photos – just have two or three goes at it (mine will usually open after the 2nd attempt) if that doesn't work then just switch it off and on again.

I do recommend however you removing all the apps (especially the live apps) from the nokia home screen as you are using up ram that you no longer need, unless you want to keep switching to the nokia homescreen !!

    Good Luck
    Angie

I'm trying it now and I must say it's fantastic. 21Mb free memory on N97 and everything is working fine. If, for some reason, I need more memory for my programs, I can exit temporarily from SBP shell. The lack of the memory is not a problem for me. With SBP closed I have 40 Mb free memory which is enough almost for everything, right? And later I can start SBP again. (No need exiting SBP so far)
Thanks for the great tip mr. Guru! My friends are really jealous now:-)

  • Phalanger

Good review. For the lack of email support outside of the standard client; try Nokia's Mail for exchange. It's still not quite as nice as Nokia Messenging but it does hook into the messaging structure in s60 so it can be used with the SPBmobile email-widget perfectly.

  • http://twitter.com/msmusicmaker msmusicmaker

I agree with you. My iSMS works great with the SPB Mobile Shell. I have also noticed that my phone doesnt lag as much as it used to when I was using the regular homescreen…not sure what made the difference lol. I love this application!

  • Slarbio412

Would anyone know if there is a tide times app out there? I can only find one for the iphone. Thanks. I'm getting an n97 mini in a couple of days.

  • Alex

The X6 is generously equipped with RAm and such… and yet doesn't get anywhere near the N97's functionality, no widgets for me. Therefore, this app appears perfect from my point of view!

  • Guapo1956

    Hi,

You should be able to add a widget for a third-party app by using choosing “Shortcut” from the first “Add a widget” screen and then choosing “Programs” and then finding the icon provided by the third-party developer.

    Cheers.

  • Memory-N97

    Ricky,
Do you know some way to get rid temporarily of the SMB Shell? Just to get back the RAM used by it to run some memory hungry app.
    Thks
