Today in Singapore, at the Nokia Connections 2010 event, Nokia unveiled its latest Symbian-powered smartphone, with the horrendous name of ‘X5-01′. The Nokia X5-01 is a non-touchscreen slider with a full QWERTY keyboard and a few handy little extra features.
The Nokia X5 is essentially a sliding E72, based on the specifications sheet. The phone is well connected, with tri-band 3G (850/1900/2100MHz or 900/1900/2100MHz) and quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz). WiFi is also on board, as well, for high-speed data transfers. The Nokia X5 is powered by S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, which most Symbian fans (myself included) believe to be the best version of Symbian ever released.
The phone hosts an impressive array of multimedia features, including a 5 megapixel camera, standard 3.5mm audio port, microSD card slot, and an oddball feature that allows you to spin the phone while music is playing to jump to a random track. I’d love to see a video of that in action.

As expected, the Nokia X5-01 includes a number of Nokia/Ovi services baked right in. This includes Nokia Messaging for Email, IM, and Social Networking, Ovi Maps with free voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation, and Ovi Store and Ovi Music (in countries where it’s already available). Of course you can also use the web-based Ovi services, too, such as Ovi Share, Ovi Contacts/Calendar, and Ovi Files.
The Nokia X5-01 is planned to be available in Q3 2010 at an unbelievable price of 165EUR (US$202) before taxes and subsidies. It will also be available in a range of colors, including Pink, Azure (blue), Graphite (black), Yellow Green, and Purple. I’ve got to say - while I find the design completely hideous, I think this will be an incredibly popular model. If Nokia can convince either T-Mobile or AT&T to carry it in the U.S., it will probably sell like crazy.
Update: Here’s a video hands-on of the phone showing off the hardware and going through the menus. It seems snappy enough, until about 1/4th of the way in, the guy launches the camera, then tries to go back to the homescreen and the phone reboots - not the best situation, lol.
