I woke up this morning to an IM from my pal James Whatley telling me I was in the Financial Times! Yeah, that’s right. The Financial Times UK published this piece on my use of Spinvox at the Nokia World event back in December. Spinvox is a speech-to-text service that allows you to get text messages instead of voicemail, and also allows you to blog or update social networks via voice.

I also got my first Press Release for that little experiment, which you can read here. Cool stuff. That’s really all I had today, I just wanted to show off my first official print quote. You can view a PDF scan of the article here, and I’ve got a copy of the paper already on the way to the apartment.

The Financial Times is one of the world’s foremost business information publications, with a worldwide circulation of over 425,000 in over 110 countries. Their website is FT.com, and requires free registration to read the complete article.

I’ve used the S60 Internet Radio application from the Nokia Research Center’s website on several phones. I was really disappointed when I discovered that my N95 had issues with the Shoutcast.com website, as that’s what enabled me to find new stations on the go.

That’s why I was REALLY thrilled to hear about Nokia’s new Internet Radio application for S60v3! It’s only officially supported on a few handsets, but if you’ve got an S60v3 handset, load it up and give it a go, it just might work! This app rocks, frankly. I’m able to use WiFi or a cellular network, and Nokia has put together a REALLY easy to use directory feature.

The main screen is simple: Last played station, Favourites, Station Directory, and Search. That’s all you need. In the directory, you can browse by genre, language, or country. There is also a Top Stations list if you’re into listening to what everyone else does. I found the selection to be pretty large, though unfortunately my favorite, Groove Salad, is not currently listed in the directory.

Luckily, you can also add your own streams, though in this version, it will only allow you to put in an http:// address. I need to find the one for Groove Salad badly.

Speaking with the demo person at Nokia World on this, it will be offiicially supported on as many new phones as they can in the future, though it will likely work on any S60v3 device out there. They also plan to load it into the Download! app regionally, when possible, to make it really easy to get.

One of the things that we did at Nokia World 2007 in Amsterdam last week was record a podcast for Ewan Spence. He more or less forced us all to sit and participate, as you’ll soon see. Unfortunately, I’m a loser and totally did not manage to record a Driving with the Guru in Amsterdam, so I’m going to also use this in place of that.

While Ewan was recording the audio for the All About Symbian podcast, Jay from MyNokiaBlog had his Nokia N82 out and recorded a nearly non-stop video for an HOUR! It’s actually kinda fun to watch to get a behind-the-scenes look, regardless of the length of time.

If you’re not in the mood to sit and watch us hang out and joke around with each other, you can also listen to the edited version of just the audio here at AllAboutSymbian.com.

Enjoy the video or audio, and both Chatting and Driving with the Guru should be back online come next week.

Nokia World is finally over, and all I can say is that I have been highly impressed, probably as much as with the Touch UI + Sensor Framework announcement. If, like most of us, you couldn’t enjoy the show live, you can check out this page on the Nokia site for a rerun of all webcasts and some downloadable pdfs.

You must know by now that the two major announcements made during the sessions were Ovi details & Comes With Music (read the press release here, watch the webcast here or see the presentation pdf here). In this post I will discuss my first impressions of the Ovi Dashboard. Hop on after the break for the juice.

Ovi’s First Impression

When Ovi was first announced at the Go Play event, I was torn between feelings of desperation and frustration. My first thought was “yeah great, one more way of doing things that will complicate my life and many others’! I sure won’t use it but it will be there to annoy me!”. You should understand that the reasons behind that feeling were: – the existence of the LifeBlog and the PC Suite application for the PC, which could and should be joined into one service – the fact that there were 3 versions of PC Suite for devices running the same platform (S60 3rd) – the Download client and the Nokia Software Market and the S60 application shop and the Nseries application shop : different places to get software from. Just too many reasons that explain the diversity and decentralization of Nokia’s services and solutions and why I wasn’t bouncing all over the floor after they first announced Ovi.

Ovi’s New Details – Nokia Brightens Up The Scene

When I read that Nokia shed more details on their Ovi gateway in Nokia World, I clicked on without further anticipation or excitation while saying to myself “this will bother me even more”, and what a surprise I was greeted with! Ovi has finally taken shape and it’s the exact shape I would have given it if I had any chance. Really, they couldn’t have captured my thoughts any better.

I just love the fact that Ovi will be available on the device, the internet and the computer: with the life we are leading today, this is the right solution. I wouldn’t want my information stuck on one computer, I would want it accessible on every computer on the globe, hence the internet Ovi. I would want to be able to access it offline, at the convenience of my home, hence the computer Ovi. I want to have it with me in my car, in my work place, on the street, everywhere, hence the device Ovi. Can you think of ANY place Ovi won’t be accessible from? Apart from Antarctica and 2000ft under the Atlantic ocean? I didn’t think so.

I also love the fact that once I update my information on one portal, it will be updated on the others. Would you stop for a second and think of how easy that will be and how many minutes/hours of work it will spare you over a week or a month, or a year?

Ovi’s Letdowns – To Take Into Account?

Yes Ovi will be available in fractions and not in one full release, yes we have to wait to get it. Yes it’s not perfect yet because there is no mention of applications being integrated in it. Yes the device gateway still has flaws. Yes we still haven’t seen it so we can’t judge on its quality yet. But can we deny that if there was one direction to be taken to integrate our whole life together, Nokia has taken THE right path?

Final Word

I just can’t express how extremely delighted I was when reading about the Ovi details and I think I emphasized on my joy enough throughout the post. I do know this service has limitations, but highlighting them isn’t the goal of this post. As I said, these are just my first impressions and I can say: Nokia finally gets it : Integration.

We lead a hectic life at amazingly high speeds. The least we need is more services that could complicate it. We just need one source to manage it all, photos, music, games, contacts, internet communities, maps,…and what source is more powerful, more accessible, more present than our mobile phones? We take them everywhere. With Ovi and Comes With Music (which has tremendous potential btw), we can now also take with them a great way to share our past life, a great tool to store the present and an amazing solution to prepare for the future.

I’m actually sitting on the plane from London to Dallas at the moment, writing this on the last few minutes I have on my laptop’s battery power. I’ve spent the past 3 days in Amsterdam at the Nokia World 2007 event, courtesy of Nokia, Nseries, and WOM World, and I’d like to share my thoughts.

First off, if you listened to the most recent episode of Chatting with the Guru, Rafe Blandford was able to give us an idea of what to expect from Nokia World, and what it is typically about. If you’re too lazy (or legitimately unable) to listen, it’s basically an event that Nokia puts on to connect with their partners around the world. It’s really more of a business-to-business event, with *lots* of ‘meeting spaces’ for conducting business, and presentations geared more to that sort of crowd than the press. I didn’t go in really expecting any sort of product announcements at all, and was thus not disappointed like others might have been. I did, however, expect them to actually launch (or open, or whatever) Ovi, rather than just talk about it more, but I can get over that.

I took my box of 250 business cards, and I’m only slightly ashamed to say that I brought home probably 230 Symbian-Guru cards. I was able to exchange cards with a handful of Nokians and other people, though. I say I’m only slightly ashamed because I’m incredibly excited about the cards I did get. I’m glad I didn’t just run around thrusting cards into everyone with a Nokia nametag’s hand. That’s not what Nokia World, or I’m, about. I got to spend a few moments with these people, finding out what it is that they actually do at Nokia, and what they get excited about. I was also flattered to discover that most of them are Symbian-Guru readers, and it was awesome to be able to elaborate on things that I’ve said here, and get their immediate feedback to a few of my rants.

That’s what Nokia World is all about, in my opinion. I met with Jukka and Jorma with the Mobile Web Server, and have some things I want to do with that. I also got a personal demonstration of the new S60 Touch UI from Minna Karvonen, whom Phil interviewed on Voice of S60 recently. I spent some time with the product manager of the 7900 Prism device, which I still want – badly. I also chatted with the creator of the new 8800 Arte series, while fondling the handsets, of course, and it’s so cool to see these guys’ eyes light up when you ask about what’s obviously their baby.

I had a killer chat with Boaz Zilberman, cheif architect at Fring. Boaz told me the story of how Fring came about, shared some of the exciting things they’re working on, and also shared a few fascinating statistics about the service. I also, of course, got to hang out with some of the bloggers that I already knew, and met a few new ones as well. It’s so awesome to be able to build these sorts of relationships with people.

There were some really awesome opportunities at Nokia World 2007, as well. The coolest thing that I saw displayed was an Interact by Gaze product from the Nokia Research Center. They had this hat outfitted with a pair of goggles, hooked up to a laptop. When you put the hat on, the goggles would track where your gaze was, and translate this into digital data. For the demo, the team had a rather large image of a statue square, with people and buildings all around. Keeping my head completely still, I was able to navigate the photo and zoom in on particular areas, simply by staring at them. It was actually quite accurate, and I spent a while thinking up different mobile handset implementations of the technology. How neat, if in a few years, you could merely look at your mobile phone to navigate the menus?

The Nokia Research Center was also showing off the Mobile Journalism Kit that they developed for Reuters. The kit itself consists of the SU-8W BT Keyboard, the DT-22 Tripod, a solar-powered charger (need to look it up, they said it was currently commercially available), and a microphone, so that you can do all of your journalism needs directly from an N95, for example. The 2 coolest parts of this setup, however, are the S60 application that connects to Reuters (and potentially WordPress) and the custom-made connector that allows the N95 (and other handsets with a 3.5mm audio jack) to use a plug-in microphone! Currently there aren’t plans to mass-produce this little converter, but I’m bothering as many people as I need to so that I can get one to use.

I got my first hands-on experience with the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, which is a HOT little number! Definitely a must-see if you’ve been considering a Tablet.

Nokia World 2007 also featured a ton of speeches that you could choose from. Most memorable are Rory Sutherland’s speech on Nokia and Porn, as well as Rob Wells’ chat about music. David Sifry of Technorati also spent some time covering blogs and social media, and I really enjoyed that. I don’t know if these are available for you to watch online (since I’m sitting on the plane), but if so, you DEFINITELY need to set some time aside to watch these. DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE GUY’S SPEECH. IT WAS DISGUSTINGLY DEPRESSING AND HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH MOBILE AT ALL. STAY AWAY.

All in all, I’d say it was a hugely successful trip, and I’m looking forward to the next one.

As you might have seen in the Press Release, this past week I conducted an experiment with Spinvox, along with Truphone and Jaiku, around liveblogging. For the Nokia World 2007 conference in Amsterdam, I setup a Nokia N81 8GB with Truphone, a SIP/MOIP client that uses WiFi or 3G to place mobile VOIP (MOIP) calls from a handset. Using Truphone, I called my Spinvox number and spoke short descriptions or statements to the service, which then converted the speech into text, and posted it to Jaiku for me. Jaiku is a microblogging/lifestream aggregator service that was recently purchased by Google.

So what’s the verdict?

It worked awesome. The real hero to me was Truphone. Although the Nokia N81 is not officially supported, I had zero trouble getting it installed and ready to rock with Truphone. Once I got to Nokia World, I had to setup the wifi access point that they had setup in the conference center, and Truphone did the rest. When I powered on my N81 without a SIM card installed, Truphone would automatically find the WiFi access point and connect to it, allowing me to make MOIP calls to anywhere in the world (and it’s free until December 31st. If you’re travelling abroad before then, you WON’T want to go without Truphone). A really killer side benefit is that I was able to make free calls to anywhere, aside from Spinvox, without having to bother with a prepaid SIM card (though I did, and that ‘experience’ will be recorded soon). Thus, inbetween Spinvoxing, I was able to call my fiance back in Texas right from the Expo floor, and for free. I was also able to call James Whatley with Spinvox, to do some initial testing to make sure everything was a go.

Spinvox made it really easy, as well. Rather than walk about focusing on typing updates onto a T9 keypad, I was able to keep my eyes alert while still updating my readers on what was going on. To me, this made everything 10 times easier, and hopefully it was a pleasant experience for them, as well. Though there were a few transcription mess-ups, and considering I was updating from the expo floor on a crowded WiFi network, Spinvox worked awesome. The service itself is constantly improving and I know they are frequently tweaking the dictionary for a better experience. Also, using voice is considerably cheaper than data or wifi in most instances, in addition to using significantly less battery power on a mobile device. Since I was in Amsterdam, a location that Spinvox doesn’t currently have local numbers, I still had to use WiFi and Truphone, but I can imagine if I was able to simply use a voice SIM card, I would have experienced even better call quality and battery life, resulting in an even more improved experience. I will most certainly be using Spinvox to update my Jaiku at every other event I go to, without a doubt.

Jaiku was included somewhat last minute. The original intent was to create a post here on Symbian-Guru, and have Spinvox updates automatically added to it, so that readers could follow a single thread for the whole of the event. However, using Jaiku ended up working well, since it allowed readers to comment on particular updates. This serves to increase reader participation, which is a big reward for any blogger.

So it was all peachy-keen, right? Well, no. I’m looking forward in the future for Spinvox to offer local numbers in more countries. Truphone, also, will cost after December 31st, and I’m not sure what those costs will be. Also, the transcription process for Spinvox will hopefully increase in the future. It has yet to get my intro, “Ricky Cadden, Symbian Guru” correct. Jaiku worked great, as well, but I wasn’t able to publish my posts in a channel, which would have been preferred. Channels on Jaiku work to offer members an easy way to track a single topic, rather than multiple authors. The Nokia N81′s battery actually made it through the day, though, which is quite impressive over a WiFi connection making phone calls repeatedly. I did notice a significant amount of heat on the handset, which Nokia could insulate a bit more against, in the future.

All in all, I’d say it was a supremely successful experiment, though. As I said, I’ll definitely be using it again at any conferences I go to. I’ll also certainly be using Truphone more in the future, as it was so easy to setup, and the automatic connection was conveneint when I powered the phone on and off for the various speeches.

As a reader, were you able to follow it, and did you enjoy the updates? What suggestions/feedback would you give me for next time?

At the recent Nokia World 2007 event in Amsterdam, Nokia and Universal Music Group announced an incredibly innovative initiative called ‘Comes With Music’. While most people are saying that it’s a nice thought, but horribly flawed, I’d like to point out why I think this will be one of the most successful music campaigns ever for the two companies.

Let’s cover the facts first, just in case you’re not familiar. Nokia Comes With Music will be a line of unannounced music-centric devices in 2008 (and probably beyond). There are no official announcements as to whether this will be limited to Nseries devices, or whether Nokia’s S40 products will be included. Prodding the music guys at the event yielded no further information, either.

Basically, with Nokia Comes With Music, your new Nokia, well, comes with music. One year of music, to be exact, from Nokia’s Music Store and Universal Music. I was able to find out that this will be directly integrated with the Nokia Music Store in its current form, and Nokia plans to sign on the other labels before officially launching the initiative.

For one year, with selected handsets, users will receive unlimited downloads from the Nokia Music Store. These tracks will be the same Windows DRM that the Nokia Music Store currently offers, and allow the user to listen to the track on the PC and one device, with 3 license transfers included before you must purchase the track again. These tracks will be downloadable via the mobile handset OR the PC, and users will need to register a Nokia Music Store account and enter a code printed on in in-box voucher.

When asked how this deal could possibly be profitable, Rob Wells, Vice President, Digital, Universal Music Group, stated that Universal will be paid from the actual sale of the handset. I was also able to confirm that after the one year period is expired, the tracks downloaded will still be playable, and the Nokia Music Store will continue to offer the user new tracks at the current pricing – no subscription, just a pay-per-track transaction. Ars Technica reported that Universal revealed a $5/month cost to Nokia for each handset, according to a recent program they announced. If Nokia passes that cost directly on to the consumer, this is a mere $60USD increase in retail handset prices. Given that most Nseries devices cost around $500USD, this is not a large sum.

Before I address the concerns that others have expressed, I want to cover a few points as to how this initiative is a guaranteed slam-dunk for Nokia, Universal, AND Consumers. Even if the consumer uses his year, and then cancels his Nokia Music Store account and never buys a Nokia product again, Nokia and Universal are still very clear winners.

The consumer wins because this is going to disrupt the digital music market. There simply is no arguing this point. Other music stores are going to have to react to this initiative in some form or fashion. The consumer pays a measly $60 extra for their handset (and, with subsidies from carriers, could potentially avoid this), and gets a full year of convenient music downloads, with an unlimited opportunity to explore the full library. Sure, they end up with DRM’d music, but it’s free, so who cares? I’ll touch on the DRM again in a moment.

Universal Music wins because they’re getting paid by Nokia for the tracks, and are thus (apparently) able to pay the artist and everyone else involved. Universal Music also gets the positive press as being one of the first record labels to actually try something innovative with digital music. Good or bad, one thing that the internet has been calling for endlessly is for the record labels to take a fresh approach to digital music. If the consumer doesn’t purchase another track after the year is expired, it’s no real loss to Universal. They still got paid.

Nokia wins the most, in my personal opinion. First, Nokia will likely see a large increase in sales of Comes With Music handsets as opposed to previous music-centric Nseries. If you’re at the phone store and can pay $400 for an iPhone, with which you have to pay for music, or pirate it, or pay $460 for a Nokia Comes With Music handset that gives you a full year of unlimited music, you’re *more* likely to pick the Nokia than you would have been previously.

Nokia also wins in the marketing department. By offering consumers a year of free access to the Nokia Music Store, they will be able to spend a full year creating a positive music experience with the Nokia brand. Consumers will (consciously or subconsciously) associate Nokia with music, and will be more likely to use or attempt to use their Nokia handset as a music player. I would even argue that non-Comes With Music handsets will see an increase in the use of their MP3 playing abilities, as well, as people discover the capabilities of their phones. Nokia, like Universal, will also be able to strengthen their reputation as an innovative company in the mobile marketplace.

Yet another win for Nokia is in the numbers arena. Since Comes With Music will be connected to the user’s Nokia Music Store account, this will greatly increase registrations for the store, which Nokia surely uses in presentations to potential partners. Nokia wins all these benefits, EVEN if the consumer purchases ONE handset, uses it for the year, and then dumps the handset and Music Store Account. The odds that EVERY customer does so are pretty low.

So what about *after* the year is up? It’s been said that it takes 2 weeks for a behaviour to become a habit. Nokia and Universal are giving users one year (that’s 52 weeks, or 26 2-week periods) to build habits. These habits include the ease and convenience of downloading legal music tracks directly to their handset, immediately. If for a full year, a consumer is able to quickly and easily download any track directly to their handset for immediate gratification, I’d say it’s likely that at the end of that year, they’ll be so hooked on the experience, they’ll stick around for more, even if only for a bit.

Now, let’s cover some things that you’re not going to like, but need to be said.

This is NOT designed or intended for everyone. At Nokia World, executives stated that they had been focusing on the ‘tech leaders’, and were now moving the focus towards the mass market. This will appeal to some people, and won’t appeal to others. That’s ok. Nothing will please everyone, and there will always be some consumers who simply refuse DRM, or who don’t like Nokia devices. Great, they can ignore this.

DRM is not always bad, and audio quality is *not* a selling point. I hear time and time again that Windows DRM sucks because it’s such crappy quality. Let’s look at this from a general consumer standpoint. Where do most people enjoy their music? What is the environment like? When most people listen to music, is that the *only* thing they are focused on, or is it used more in the background? I would argue that for the general consumer, music is a soundtrack. They’ll sing to it in the car, have it on in the house while cleaning, or some other similar setting. In those cases, they’re likely listening to music over loudspeakers, not through headphones. In this instance, there’s so much interference between the speaker and the person’s eardrums. Outside noises, phone calls, walls, kids, etc. Thus, given the typical listening scenario, most consumers wouldn’t be able to tell a difference between a WMA file and a FLAC file, and if they could, likely wouldn’t care.

moves such as Comes WiNokia is a for-profit company. This move is designed to encourage people to live what I like to call the Nokia Lifestyle. Withth Music and Ovi applications, products, and services to enrich and enable your life. They have no reason to make sure that Comes Wi Music tracks work wi, Nokia is very obviously wanting to make it extremely easy to use Nokiathth a Zune or an iPod, because it’s not designed to increase their Music Store sales or usage. Comes With Music, just like every other Nokia initiative, is designed to sell more handsets. Period, end of story. It’s not absurd, either. Apple does it with iTunes and the iPhone, the same thing I’ve done with my Nokia’s for years. It’s integrating your PC and Mobile lives easily. To hear it from Nokia, moving life to the 4th screen. You know what else? It’s ok for big corporations to make profits. That’s how they got big in the first place, and that’s how they’ll continue to offer products and services that make your life easier. If you don’t agree, then it’s obviously not designed for you. Move along.

However, it’s important to point out that nothing is perfect. There are a few things about the Comes With Music thing that I’m not impressed with. The first is the regionality of it. Since it’s directly integrated with the Nokia Music Store, obviously it’ll only be valuable if you have access to the Nokia Music Store, which no one other than the U.K. currently has. Granted, they’ve got till next summer or so to launch more locations, but they’d better hurry.

If Nokia isn’t able to sign more labels up for the service, it will really hinder the usefulness and market impact. Universal Music has one of (or the, not sure) largest music libraries, but there’s obviously still artists that they *don’t* have. Nokia needs to be able to sign up the other labels for this to really make an impact.

I personally think it was foolish to announce this service at least 6 months early. What better way to give others a chance to beat you to market than to tell them what you’re doing in 6 months? Also, these long delays between announcement and launch only serve to frustrate tech leaders, if not consumers. For instance, with Ovi, it was announced in September at Nokia Go Play, and we honestly didn’t get very much more information on it at Nokia World, other than that it will launch in 2008. So why are you telling us about it? Why not wait till it’s READY, or at least 1-2 months away? It just gets old to hear about vaporware (which, to the internet, both Ovi and Comes With Music currently are, and apparently will be until well into 2008).

What do you think about the Nokia Comes With Music initiative? Do you think it’s brilliant, or completely foolish and wasteful? Why? Is DRM honestly something that concerns you, or would you really even notice if your tracks had it?

I just got done listening to the guy from Universal Music speak and answer questions. I habe’t yet read the press release,so these questions and thoughts may be addressed in there, but we’ll find put soon.

I want to say that I think it’s a fantastic idea and really applaud both Nokia and Universal for taking the initiative and coming put with the deal.

Technorati Tags: Nokia, nokia world, universal, music

My first few questions are mostly technical. First, I want to know what devices this will be available/usable on. Will there be specific CWM-branded packaging? More importantly, what devices will be branded as such? Just Nseries, or will there also be s40 devices, Eseries, multimedia division, etc?

Where will I get these tracks? Through the Nokia Music Store (the one that’s only available in the UK right now), or will there be yet another portal? Will I be able to download those tracks directly to my handset?

Next up is the business model. It’s basically a subscription service, where your first year is free. What if I decide I want to keep the subscription live after that? How much? AndStore, which is a per-track service? Lastly, Rob Wells stated that the money is made from the sale of the device. Does that mean we can expect the already pricey Nseries devices to get more expensive? If so, will there be additional non-CWM versions, at a more affordable price? It sounds like Nokia is willing to sacrifice some of their initial handset profits in hopes that CWM will increase sales enough to offset the loss. Also, it seems a worthwhile experiment to help increase the knowledge and use of Nokia handsets as music devices.

What do you think? Do you think the Nokia Comes With Music initiative is a good step towards reducing the draw of piracy? doesn’t that compete directly with the Nokia Music
